About STEM From Dance STEM From Dance (SFD) envisions a world where underrepresented minority girls are creative, confident, and equipped to be leaders and innovators in the STEM fields. To this end, SFD gives girls access to a STEM education by using dance to empower, educate, and encourage them as our next generation of engineers, scientists, and techies. Since 2012, SFD has partnered with schools and community centers, serving hundreds of girls across New York City and beyond.

About the Role As the Director, Operations, you will play a critical role in partnering with the Chief Executive Officer in strategic decision-making and operations as STEM From Dance continues to enhance its quality programming and build capacity. You will support in the areas of finance, human resources, technology, and administration. This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

STEM From Dance has been on a consistent growth trajectory for the past nine years, increasing our budget by 10X and doubling our students served annually. We are at a pivotal and compelling moment as an organization and are thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome a new Director, Operations to play a critical role in our next stage. This role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.


  • Finance (34%)
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning processes in conjunction with the CEO, administer and review all financial plans and budgets, monitor progress and changes, keep the senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status, and suggest cost-saving measures
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess any changes necessary
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting
  • Implement a robust contracts management and financial management/reporting system; ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual
  • Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the board of directors
  • Human Resources (33%)
  • Manage and further develop STEM From Dance’s human resources and administration, enhancing professional development, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation, training, and recruiting
  • Establish and manage a comprehensive training program to educate employees regarding staff tools, policies, and procedures
  • Manage internal coordination and team communication to ensure staff are connected and informed of organizational goals and initiatives
  • Design and implement initiatives to build team culture
  • Technology & Administration (33%)
  • Design a fully functioning technology infrastructure, including the development and maintenance of Salesforce
  • Manage the storage and organization of files and data
  • Oversee administrative functions as well as facilities to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales
  • Ensure that the organization systems are comprehensive and integrated
  • Manage special projects

Prior Experience

  • Minimum of a BA, ideally with an MBA/CPA or related degree
  • At least 7-10 years of professional work experience; at least 6 years of broad financial and operations management experience preferred
  • Non-profit experience preferred
  • Experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area, and has preferably overseen a human resources function previously
  • Experience using Google Drive, Quickbooks, and Salesforce preferred
  • Project planning experience required, with proven ability to see large projects through to completion
