Artistic Director and Program Manager

The University of Virginia Office of Faculty Affairs seeks to hire an Artistic and Program Director for UVA Acts, a program that promotes preventative practices that foster engaging and inclusive spaces for working, teaching, and learning at UVA. The Artistic and Program Director will lead an applied theater program for faculty and instructional development through a mix of applied and community-based theatre programming. UVA Acts addresses issues including equitable faculty search processes, microaggressions in the classroom, mentorship, inclusive teaching practices, and more. The Artistic and Program Director will:

  • Engage with the Office of the Provost, including the Center for Teaching Excellence, and the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to formulate a plan to address the issues of primary importance to UVA and the concerns of diverse UVA community members.

  • Collaborate with University stakeholders (administrators, faculty, staff, and students) to research and understand evidence-based practices in creating successful interventions that address the community’s needs. Consult with faculty and administrators to develop applied theatre programs based on this research, including facilitation and dramatic structures.

  • Schedule and plan faculty development events. Recruit, cast, rehearse, and support multiple ensembles of actors. Facilitate dialogue among audiences of faculty, graduate students, and administrators.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA and at least 2 years of apprenticeship/training in applied theatre is required.  Preference will be given to candidates with a MFA, MA, PhD in theatre with coursework and work experience in applied theatre

  • Experience with equitable dialogue facilitation around topics such as racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, xenophobia, classism, and other aspects of inequitable power structures.

  • Strong understanding of issues of marginalization and oppression and how those can emerge in spaces of teaching and learning and/or workplace settings.

  • Experience producing new and established applied theatre programming for specific audiences.

  • Experience directing and developing new plays and/or applied theatre programs with an equitable and power-sharing approach to rehearsal and casting

  • Experience gathering community feedback and insight for developing applied theatre programs and/or new plays

  • Experience leading equitable collaborations across difference in social locations and power structures

  • Strong organizational skills, preferably in areas of company management/stage management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Program administration experience

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Familiarity with academic work environments and faculty career structures

The Artistic and Program Director will report to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs.
