About Our Organization

At Beam, we’ve spent the last 18 years coalescing multi-ethnic and intergenerational learning communities of youth, artists, and teachers who work together to construct spectacular projects – big and small – that highlight the magic of creative cooperation.

We are a staff of 30 full-time adults and youth, engaging 3,000 students and 300+ teachers in 28 public schools annually in projects that bring learning to life. More than 96% of the young people we serve identify as youth of color and/ or newly immigrated. Our career readiness and work-based learning programs serve 1000+ young people a year. Our large-scale public artworks reach tens of thousands of people at installations across the city. We collaborate with and employ 400+ youth each year at our summer programs in New Hampshire and on Governors Island.

Job Position Summary

The Youth Program Manager will implement and facilitate an original hands-on Project Based Learning (PBL) curriculum during a summer program for 14- and 15-year-old youth from various NYC public high schools. The Youth Program Manager will collaborate with Project Designers and a team of Program Assistants as they implement a project-based learning curriculum in areas related to art, making, and digital media. The youth Program Manager will engage and support youth participants through the program to ensure a positive youth development experience. The Youth Program Manager will report to the Beam Center Youth Employment Director. 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with other team members to implement a project-based learning program
  • Establish a positive learning environment for youth
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with youth
  • Support, coach, and encourage youth to participate and engage in a collaborative environment
  • Interact critically and constructively with a team to develop and implement positive SEL
  • Communicate regularly with other team members
  • Manage youth participant data, attendance, and program documentation
  • Learn new tools and techniques to enhance your own practice

Qualifications of strong candidates:

  • Spanish fluency is strongly preferred
  • Experience working with diverse populations of youth
  • Associate’s degree and/or 3+ years of experience working with youth
  • Highly collaborative: able to ask questions, share professional opinions, celebrate teamwork
  • Knowledge of DYCD programming 
  • Highly independent, able to set and manage personal goals, expectations, and schedule
  • Detail-oriented with experience managing multi-faceted projects while meeting deadlines
  • Imaginative: able to be flexible and resourceful
  • Strong organizational skills; experience with administrative tasks
  • Comfortable commuting throughout all NYC boroughs
