Job Position Summary

Youth Arts Projects for Spring 2023 (and TBD future 2023 and beyond sessions)

Instead of a traditional Sunday School, we are seeking teaching artists who can help our young people connect with their faith on Sunday mornings through art (music, puppetry, movement, visual art, story-telling, etc.). We are looking to create a safe space for our youth (ages 5-12) to engage with their own experience and the deep wisdom of scripture through artmaking.

More than teaching a specific theology, we believe that it is important for our youth to understand how the ancient texts of scripture have something deep, real and healing to offer us. They offer us the long view, understanding healing and redemption over time vs immediate gratification as our society now presents to us. They offer us a way to process our hurt and suffering, with the knowledge of God’s deep love for us and all of creation.

Our desire is to have a teaching artist who is comfortable working within an open and affirming church, using stories, a story or psalm of the Bible as a touch point, to do a 4 or 5-week project with our youth. The artist does not need to be a theologian, or even a Christian! The clergy will provide some theological framing so that the artist can do what they do best: guide our young people through projects that will inspire imagination, reflection, and a sense of capability. The projects could be displayed or presented to the congregation at the completion.

Session 1: April 23, April 30, May 7, May 14
Timing: Sundays, 10am to 11am
The church will provide an adult volunteer to be present and help.

Proposals for projects do not need to be long, but a clear idea needs to be articulated after meeting with Mo. Lindsay. We expect that the teaching artist will come early to each session to set up and prepare the space and participate in a short debrief after each session to let us know how things are going.
