Job Position Summary

The Volunteer and Programs Manager oversees 826NYC’s after-school writing and literacy programs and manages volunteers across all programs. The Manager collaborates with the Director of Education and manages two full-time program coordinators to ensure that weekday field trips and after-school programs operate as effectively as possible, including initiating changes that will better serve our students and help increase 826NYC’s reach. The Volunteer and Programs Manager works with the Volunteer and Programs Coordinator to develop and implement volunteer training programs, recruitment and retention strategies, and appreciation efforts. The Manager leads the way in partnership development with colleges, in communities, and at corporations, for volunteer recruitment and retention. The Manager leads curriculum development for after school programs for grades 1-8 and oversees curriculum development for the Teen Writers’ Collective.

Reports to: Director of Education

Supervises: Programs Coordinator, Volunteer & Programs Coordinator, volunteers

Hours: Mon-Friday 10:30 am-6:30 pm with some evenings and weekends as necessary. Most times of year, work from home is available 2 days per week. Limited flex time is available on WFH/remote days.

Salary: $50,000-$55,000

Benefits: Full employer-provided health insurance coverage; dental and vision are available but employee-covered. PTO package includes vacation days, sick days, covid sick days, and personal days. The 826NYC office is closed from December 24th to January 1st each year.

Roles & Responsibilities

Programs:

  • Supervise program coordinators and ensure they are serving students as effectively as possible
  • Develop skills-based creative writing and literacy curriculum that is tailored for students grades 1-8 in Write After School and Write Away Workshops
  • Support program coordinator in developing and implementing writing and leadership curriculum for students grades 9-12 in the Teen Writers’ Collective
  • Collect and review evaluation data to support the tracking of after-school effectiveness and student growth in writing and social emotional skills
  • Support communication with parents and guardians of current and prospective students to ensure strong enrollment and retention across programs, and support consistent student engagement
  • Oversee cohort of volunteer editors, translators, and designers to produce two dual-language chapbooks and one annual review each year
  • Communicate and collaborate with the Programs Team to align after-school programs and share best practices for student success
  • Participate in 826 National monthly programs calls to share resources and report out on best practices
  • All other duties assigned by the Executive Director

Volunteers and Interns:

  • Lead volunteer team in the development and improvement of the volunteer program, including training materials, diversity & inclusion practices, recruitment, and the implementation and sharing of these best practices with all 826NYC staff
  • Supervise the Volunteers & Programs Coordinator
  • Facilitate and support the training of all volunteers, including skills-based volunteers, while responding to the ongoing needs of the volunteer community
  • Develop, maintain, and oversee sustainable partnerships with colleges, corporations, and community partners, with the goal of maintaining high levels of volunteer support for all 826NYC programs; advise and support the volunteer and programs team staff on outreach strategies
  • Maintain volunteer database and tracking systems and work with the development department to analyze, report, and train 826NYC staff on volunteer data and the Salesforce system
  • Support summer interns from 826NYC’s Teen Writers’ Collective by creating and leading professional development workshops and performing supervisory duties.
  • Create volunteer appreciation initiatives, support materials, and recruitment systems
  • Participate in regular 826 National calls to share resources and report out on chapter best practices
  • All other duties assigned by the Executive Director

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience in youth development
  • Minimum of 1 year experience conducting community outreach for program or volunteer enrollment
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in education program development
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working with a diverse group of youth ages 6-18

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and interpersonal
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience creating and teaching a writing-based curriculum
  • Experience supervising staff members and/or volunteers
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in K-12 education, especially those related to New York City’s five boroughs
  • A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, self-starter
  • Proficient with computer applications — (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive)
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • A deep passion and commitment to the mission of 826NYC

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency or proficiency with the Spanish language is a plus
  • Experience working with, motivating, and supervising volunteers and interns
  • Experience with Salesforce or similar customer relationship management systems
  • Experience with InDesign a plus
