Founded in 1977, our staff of 85 experienced Teaching Artists provides a full spectrum of arts experiences in over 140 schools in all 5 boroughs of NYC. Marquis Studios directly serves 25,000 children each year. Our programs are designed to integrate arts activities with instruction in academic core subjects by making use of state and city standards. The planning process is individualized for each program or residency with the Teaching Artists and classroom Teachers meeting to discuss the educational goals of each class before the lesson plan is created. Overview of Program:
Marquis Studios has received a grant from New York Community Trust to pilot the Theater for Early Learner Literacy (TELL) Program at five NYC public schools over the next two years. The TELL program adapts our long-running Storytelling residency, allowing Kindergarten and 1st Grade students to explore fundamental literacy skills through engaging, hands-on theater games and activities. TELL will help supplement schools’ existing literacy curricula in several ways, but the primary focus will be building oral language and enhancing students’ fluency, comprehension and knowledge base.
Job Position Summary
Marquis Studios is looking for Theater Teaching Artists with experience teaching early education arts integration residencies, specifically in literacy and theater. In year one, TELL Teaching Artists will attend literacy focused professional development workshops and attend curriculum development meetings working closely with a team of other Marquis Studios Teaching Artists as well as with the Director of Education and a Literacy Specialist to build a 20-week early learner literacy-through-theater curriculum connected to New York State literacy, arts and social emotional learning standards. TELL Teaching Artists will then implement and assess this curriculum in kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms in various boroughs of New York City during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school year. Teaching Artists will work collaboratively with classroom teachers and students throughout their assigned 20-week residencies. Each residency will result in a sharing of learning that demonstrates the skills students developed while participating in this program.

SALARY RANGE: Teaching: $80 – $85 per hr. plus additional administrative stipend
Curriculum and Professional Development Meetings: $25 per hr.
Roles & Responsibilities
- In-school availability – Teaching Artists must be available a minimum of 2 full school days per week from January-June for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years.
- Attend and contribute to curriculum development meetings in September- January 2023-24.
- Attend a series of professional development workshops focused on literacy and best teaching practices.
- Collaborate with a Literacy Specialist and small team of Theater Teaching Artists to create a literacy-based theater curriculum for kindergarten and 1st Grade students aligned with NYC Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, Next Generation Learning Standards, Social Emotional Learning Competencies and Culturally Responsive- Sustaining Education Framework.
- Work closely with classroom teachers and specific school administrators before the residency begins to outline a plan for the assigned 20-week program, discuss learning objectives, gain insight on student needs, discuss culminating event expectations and schedule weekly programming.
- Facilitate an introductory TELL overview professional development workshop for partner school staff
- Work with students to:
- Engage, enrich, and empower young creative artists of all abilities.
- Develop literacy skills, critical thinking and social emotional learning
- Expand arts literacy through cultural and community connections highlighting marginalized voices
- Complete administrative tasks by assigned deadline (unit plans, lesson plans, workshop logs, timesheets, planning forms, assessment reports, etc.)
Ideal qualities / skill set:
- Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility.
- Familiar with the NYC arts education community, NYC arts education standards and best practices.
- Demonstrated experience developing curricula for kindergarten – 2nd grade and teaching early childhood arts and literacy.
- Experience or strong interest in working with students with disabilities and within Inclusion, ICT and self-contained classrooms.
- Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact authentically with diverse populations.
- Motivated, organized and detail‐oriented with strong problem-solving experience necessary to manage and prioritize varied responsibilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
