Ping Chong and Company (PCC) creates original, interdisciplinary, and community-specific work, and engages multi-generational artists to build on, and expand the singular and visionary body of work created by leading theatrical innovator and National Medal of Arts recipient Ping Chong. Based on the company’s methodologies in interview-based theater and devised performance, and rooted in dual commitments to social justice and the amplification of youth voice, PCC’s education programs bring theatrical storytelling residencies to elementary, middle, and high schools across the NYC boroughs, using peer interview techniques, writing exercises, and drama activities to engage youth in exploring their sense of identity, place, and belonging. Program goals include building community, increasing empathy, strengthening ensemble skills, deepening cross-cultural understanding, and supporting each student’s development of confident self-expression, pride in their multifaceted cultural & personal identity, and belief in the power of their own creative voice.
Job Position Summary
PCC seeks Teaching Artists to join our TA cohort and train in our curricular approach to theatrical storytelling based on personal narrative. Residencies typically involve approximately 20 teaching hours (plus prep time) over 10-12 weeks in the winter & spring months. Most TAs in our cohort lead 1-3 residencies in a given school year. Paid training is provided to all applicants. (Post-training placements are not guaranteed as school needs/schedules vary and change.)
Roles & Responsibilities
If offered a school placement, PCC Teaching Artists facilitate a guided creative process in which students identify key memories that have shaped their sense of self, weave their stories into a collectively-written script, and build performance skills (voice, movement, expression) for a final onstage presentation of their original theater piece. Effective PCC Teaching Artists are reliable, organized, prepared, communicative, collaborative, dynamic, and reflective about their teaching practice.
