About Our Organization

The mission of the Institute of Music for Children (IMC) is to engage children and youth in artistic expression and the creative process. IMC is a non-profit organization which fundraises 75% of its’ budget to ensure Arts Education is accessible to all children in the great Elizabeth, NJ area. Guided by its vision of H.A.R.M.O.N.Y. – Helping Achieve Responsible, Motivated, Optimistic, Neighborhood Youth – the Institute is building a community of high-achieving citizens who are arts lovers and arts makers through professional instruction, mentorship, and family engagement.

Job Position Summary

We are currently seeking motivated Teaching Artists in the Visual Arts, Early Childhood Acting, and Piano to join our team for the 2023-2024 After School Institute. IMC’s After School Institute offers group classes once per week from October – May for children and teens. We are looking for teachers for the following classes:

Visual Arts:

  • Tuesdays
    • 5:30pm-6:30pm Art Workshop class for grades K-2
    • 6:40pm-7:40pm Art Workshop for grades 3-5
  • Wednesdays
    • 5:30pm-6:30pm Art Workshop class for grades 4-7
    • 6:40pm-7:40pm Art Workshop for grades K-3 OR Crochet for grades 3-7
  • Thursdays
    • 7:30pm-8:50pm Painter’s Studio for grades 8th-12th
  • Saturdays
    • 11:45am-12:45pm Puppetry for grades 2-5

Instrumental Music

  • Saturdays
    • 10:30am – 11:30am Piano for grades K-3
    • 11:45am-12:45pm Piano for grades 4-7

Acting:

  • Wednesdays
    • 5:30pm-6:30pm Acting for grades K-2
  • Saturdays
    • 11:45am-12:45pm Acting for grades K-3
    • 11:45am-12:45pm Puppetry for grades 2-5

This is a contract and on-site role located in Elizabeth, NJ. The Teaching Artist will be responsible for developing and implementing classes in either visual arts, early childhood acting, or piano for children in the community. Day-to-day responsibilities include instruction, lesson planning, student assessment, and leading class discussions and activities.

Roles & Responsibilities

The Teaching Artist will be responsible for developing and implementing classes in either visual arts, early childhood acting, or piano for children in the community. Day-to-day responsibilities include instruction, lesson planning, student assessment, and leading class discussions and activities.

Work Activities Include:

  • Planning individual lessons and overall plans of work for the pupils you teach.
  • Developing knowledge of materials and repertoire for students at different stages of their artistic development.
  • Teaching individual and/or group lessons lasting from 30 minutes to an hour or longer, generally incorporating elements of general techniques in your art form.
  • Communicating with the administrators & parents about their child’s lessons and progress
  • Ensuring that you adhere to health and safety standards, are adequately insured and work in line with child protection legislation.
