Comprised of 78 musicians, The New York Pops is the largest independent pops orchestra in the United States, and the only professional symphonic orchestra in New York City specializing in popular music. Led by Music Director and Conductor Steven Reineke, the orchestra performs an annual subscription series at Carnegie Hall, and is among the venue’s most presented ensembles.

Through its PopsEd music education programs, The New York Pops fulfills its dedication to lifelong learning and collaborates with public schools, community organizations, and senior centers throughout the five boroughs of New York City. PopsEd allows thousands of New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds to participate in fully customizable residency programs that blend traditional education with pure fun.

Position Overview: We are currently seeking Teaching Artists who specialize in teaching K-5 Chorus, and Grade 6-8 Low Brass and Percussion students.

PopsEd Teaching Artists are actively performing professional musicians or theater practitioners, with a strong background in music or theater education. Our residencies are customized to a school’s preference and provide students with a solid foundation of technique, while nurturing life skills such as listening, observation, and creative expression. PopsEd programming takes place at schools and after-school sites across NYC.

• Engage students in music or musical theater instruction in-person (this will require travel to NYC public schools throughout the five boroughs)
• Planning lessons in line with PopsEd curriculum benchmarks and national core arts standards
• Lead students in instrument or vocal sectionals, helping to refine technique and rehearse selected pieces for performance
• Provide feedback and guidance for students
• Generate an enthusiasm for learning and develop a positive professional relationship with students
• Maintain communication with both TNYP office and school contacts
• Complete relevant paperwork as required

Qualifications/requirements:

• Have prior experience as a music educator
• Be organized, responsible and adaptable, with strong group management skills
• Comfortable with virtual instruction, if needed (e.g. Zoom, Google meets etc)
• Strong collaborative skills
• A passion for arts education
• Positive attitude
• Proof of vaccination
• Fingerprinted by NYCDOE
• Understand the national core arts standards
• Ability to commit to PopsEd for school year 2023-24 (October through June)
• Ability and willingness to travel across the five boroughs
