We do this through developing, amplifying and celebrating the voices of girls and young women through socially conscious theater-making, storytelling and performance.

Girl Be Heard seeks a Teaching Artist for its pilot film/documentary making program, Girls Make Media (GMM). The Teaching Artist will work to create a brave space and bring together students using Girl Be Heard’s listening model. The Teaching Artist will give GMM participants a foundation in artivism using digital media, photography and film as tools for storytelling and performance, and cultivating an introduction to social justice issues affecting themselves and women and girls around the world. Each week they will lead participants through the creative process of creating original works, which will be performed by the students.

Ideal candidates will have a strong background in planning and leading digital media, film/documentary programming, and must be passionate about developing girls’/gender non-conforming voices. We particularly seek individuals who have a strong awareness of healing centered practice and social emotional learning tools.

The Teaching Artist will be hired for the length of the GMM program cycle (approximately February 2022 – June 2022) with the understanding that this program may continue on during the year.  The GMM program is slated to meet once a week for 2 hours per session in a hybrid model. (Day and time to be confirmed.) In addition to the weekly workshops with students, the GMM teaching artist will be expected to attend scheduled training and program meetings with the Director of Programs/Program Manager.

Qualifications:

• Experience in creating lesson plans, writing, facilitating a variety of hands-on, interactive workshops with diverse populations, i.e., students with disabilities, English Language Learners, different socioeconomic backgrounds, etc.
• A demonstrated artistic practice in theatre and/or writing for performance.
• Availability for all scheduled sessions, trainings, and meetings.
• An understanding of dismantling racism and trauma-informed/healing centered engagement is essential.
• Strong organization and administrative skills. Applicants must have ability to work with minimal supervision, be highly detail-oriented, diligent, able to adapt easily to change, and able to work in a high-paced environment.
• Ability to reach all students based on an understanding of diverse developmental levels.
• Proven experience with effective classroom management strategies.
• Ability to plan with others and articulate goals and objectives.
• Ability to communicate and work collaboratively with site contacts.
• Equivalent relevant work experience preferred, in the areas of Education and/or the Arts or Bachelor’s degree.
• Demonstrated commitment to an understanding of issues of social justice, leadership through a feminist lens and girls’ empowerment. .
• Strong knowledge of, or experience with, the NYC public school system.
• Experience with playwriting, devising, editing, and/or dramaturgical work preferred.

Deadline: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, but priority will be given to those received by February 4th, 2021.

Compensation: Part‐time, $37.50/hr.

• Serve as a positive, engaging role model for a diverse group of young people as they explore personal identity and social justice issues through games and exploration.
• Create a brave space for youth to share and grow.

• Utilize your background (digital media, film, photography, performing arts, visual arts, writing) to create adaptable lesson plans and special projects/activities for students.
• Facilitate weekly Girls Make Movie sessions that guide participants to an understanding of the documentary filmmaking principles and standards of style and content, and to create one finished documentary short (15-25 minutes) that they can distribute through film festivals.
• Complete all required paperwork in a timely manner to support programming, administration, and monitoring and evaluation, including weekly session reports.
• Maintain consistent communication with the site supervisor and keep them abreast with what’s happening at your site.
• Attend all required training, meetings and relevant professional development opportunities.
