Baryshnikov Arts, founded in 2005 by Artistic Director Mikhail Baryshnikov, is rooted in the belief that artists hold irreplaceable roles in our world by shaping perspectives, offering new approaches, and initiating crucial conversations in complex social, political, and cultural environments. The Education and Community Engagement programs of Baryshnikov Arts exist to support excellent accessible, interdisciplinary arts experiences for anyone and the Teaching Artists within these programs are essential to delivering the programs with this vision at the forefront of their teaching practice. Teaching Artists are hired as part-time seasonal employees and have rates for planning, evaluation, and administrative tasks (administrative rate) and direct contact hours with program participants (instruction rate).

Job Position Summary

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching Artists, Drama, report to the Director of Education and Community Engagement and have schedules determined by the programming and special events calendar. These are agreed upon mutually between the Director of Education and Community Engagement and the Teaching Artist prior to a program commencing. This role oversees all in-classroom instruction in relation to Baryshnikov Arts-determined programming.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Drama instructor with an interest and resume demonstrating that working in Drama education is their main career focus. Additionally, they will have a demonstrable record of successfully building curriculum to meet the stated overarching goals and learning objectives of a broader program model. Experience working within the structures of culturally responsive pedagogical practice is a plus.

This particular role will work in the Spring Break programs Baryshnikov Arts is presenting in Tivoli, NY April 14-18, 2025.

Roles & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan classes that align pedagogically and philosophically with the stated goals and objectives of the Baryshnikov Arts Education and Community Engagement programs
  • Oversee and deliver direct instruction of the curriculum to Baryshnikov Arts program participants
  • Assume full responsibility for successful classroom management during programs
  • Respond to participant needs in the moment and with a calm, appropriate demeanor
  • Revise plans as needed to ensure optimal participant engagement
  • Participate in regular faculty planning meetings and collaboration as determined necessary by Director of Education and Community Engagement
  • Respond efficiently to regular feedback as delivered post-classroom observation by Director of Education and Community Engagement
  • Communicate regularly and swiftly in relation to scheduling changes, in-classroom occurrences, and programming needs, particularly with participant safety as a priority
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in the Faculty Handbook
  • Undergo a background check as a part of the onboarding process

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.A., B.F.A and or B.S. in arts education (for example, Theatre Education) or in art form itself (for example, Theatre)
  • At least 5 years’ experience in lead teaching experience within the art form specified in the Baryshnikov Arts program
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of childhood developmental stages and their associated impact on classrooms, particularly for children ages 4-12
  • Experience and training in teaching within a culturally responsive pedagogical environment
  • Ability to commute daily to Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, NY (please note that teaching artists unable to commit to this will not be considered as housing and transportation cannot be provided as part of this opportunity)
  • Experience and training in classroom management practices
  • Experience and training in systems of curriculum writing
  • Very strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge and keen interest in Baryshnikov Arts programming and mission
  • Strong communication and people skills, particularly an enjoyment of working as a mentor for young people
  • Up to date First Aid/CPR certification a plus

Compensation

  • This is a part-time seasonal position.
  • Administrative Rate: $22 per hour
  • Instruction Rate: $60 per hour

Benefits
Access to Baryshnikov Arts performances and open rehearsals when available, and priority access to $10 per hour studio rental rate when available and within NYSCA parameters.
