About the Education Department
The Queens Museum’s Education Department offers a range of free and low-cost award-winning learning experiences that connect people across the lifespan with the Museum’s acclaimed exhibitions, collections, artist projects and public programs. They take place at the Museum and also at various community partner sites across the borough of Queens, a county of 2.4 million people and one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse places in the world. This community work includes long-term partnerships with over 30 Queens public schools, various Queens Library branches, hospitals, social service agencies, adult rehabilitation centers and much more. In all this work, the education department is committed to promoting the agency and imagination of all people, regardless of their backgrounds.
About ArtAccess:
Piloted in 1983 as Please Touch to provide art education for people with low vision, ArtAccess has grown into a nationally replicated model designed for all audiences, including those with disabilities and their families to enjoy a personal connection to art and cultural institutions.
Each year, the Queens Museum provides unique programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities across the New York City area. ArtAccess programs are designed and led by trained museum educators in collaboration with licensed art therapists.
Job Position Summary
Position Overview:
Queens Museum teaching artists are part of a diverse team of highly motivated, creative, responsive and reflective educators. Teaching artists promote interpretation of visual art and material culture using a variety of strategies both in Queens Museum galleries, public school classrooms, and community centers. In addition, teaching artists develop and lead hands-on projects that promote learning in and through the arts.
Roles & Responsibilities
School Programs
- Leading art-making sessions in school classrooms in collaboration with teachers at the Museum’s partner public schools and partner sites. This includes inclusive programming at D75 and D79 public schools.
- Developing thematic curriculum and supporting lesson plans that integrate the museum’s permanent and changing exhibitions with relevant content in school curriculums.
- Developing curriculum that allows students to investigate source objects or materials, promotes guided discussions and hands-on art activities and meets the goal of supporting teachers in their classroom teaching. QM art instruction is expected to address all appropriate standards of Visual Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math, when applicable.
Family Programs
- Developing and facilitating in-person programs for ArtAccess Open Studio weekends. Facilitating drop-in programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities
Adult Programs:
- Developing and facilitating programs for Creative Imagination. Queens Museum programming for adults with memory loss and their caregivers. (both virtually and in-person)
- Developing and facilitating Verbal Description programming for visitors who are blind or have low vision. (both virtually and in-person)
Additional Responsibilities:
- Facilitating guided museum experiences and tours for visiting school and adult groups through exhibitions at the Museum.
- Participating in staff professional development workshops, seminars and other activities with education staff, curators and other specialists.
- Educators are expected to independently read recommended or assigned readings related to permanent and changing exhibitions. Educators are also expected to maintain an awareness of public school Common Core curriculum and National Blueprints for the Arts Standards.
- Maintaining and organizing art materials for art making sessions. Prepping and cleaning up before and after each art making session.
- Compiling lists of necessary art making materials and generating a digital lesson plan that can be referenced by Queens Museum staff and collaborating teachers or community center administrators.
