Job Position Summary

Bryant Park Corporation seeks part-time staff with fine arts and/or education experience to lead art workshops for different age groups at the Bryant Park Art Cart. The Art Cart is a free-standing cart located on the Upper Terrace (behind the New York Public Library) that offers free art and craft supplies to the public. Materials range from paper and pencils; to paint and brushes; to stickers, ribbons, and fabric.

The Teaching Artist will be responsible for planning and leading 2-4 Art Cart workshops a week. The ideal candidate will be flexible and resourceful with their workshops. This includes familiarizing yourself with Bryant Park art supply inventory, prioritizing using materials already in supply, and using the park as inspiration for workshops and projects. The teaching artist should also be outgoing and welcoming to park visitors; comfortable working outside; attentive to detail and cleanliness; and experienced working with diverse communities of New Yorkers.

The Teaching Artist will report to the Operations Associate. Hours are flexible but include some weekends. Workshop times will be decided in collaboration with the Operations Associate.

The pay is $25-$45/hour commensurate with experience.

Roles & Responsibilities

Duties:

  • Plan and execute themed art and craft workshops for different ages and skill levels
  • Act as a host for the park, and interact with visitors politely and patiently
  • Teach basic drawing and art skills, and adapt teaching to different ages and skill levels
  • Be willing and enthusiastic about working outside
  • Manage the amount of materials released to each Art Cart participant
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization at the Art Cart during workshops
  • Record workshop attendance
  • Assist in special sessions including: sketching classes, live-model sessions, craft-hour, etc.
  • On some occasions, open and/or close the Art Cart
  • Unpack / pack materials for storage as needed; set up and break down material stations based on activity; and monitor inventory of materials library
  • Take direction from management staff regarding special assignments
  • Walk and/or stand for most of shift; lift things as heavy as 30 lbs
