Rooted in Washington Heights and Inwood, People’s Theatre Project (PTP) makes theatre with and for immigrant communities to build a more just and equitable world.
People’s Theatre Project’s core programming includes: PTP Partnerships, which provide K–12 students the experience of devising theatre in their school environments; the PTP Academy, which offers dedicated young people a rigorous and supportive multi-year arts & social justice training program; and the PTP Company, which offers young people and all New Yorkers access to professionally-produced devised theatre. Through this programmatic cycle, PTP participants deepen their sense of power, strengthen their connection to community, and develop the skills to become the next generation of creative, collaborative and compassionate civic artists.
Job Position Summary
People’s Theatre Project is seeking experienced Teaching Artists with a theatre background to join our passionate and growing family of artist-activist-educators. Bilingual Spanish/English speakers are strongly encouraged to apply.
Roles & Responsibilities
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Be an ambassador for People’s Theatre Project at our partnering schools
- Facilitate assigned semester and/or school-year long residencies.
- Prepare and facilitate group instruction in alignment with PTP curriculum.
- Serve as an affirming role model.
- Safeguard the physical and emotional welfare of children in accordance with program and residency site trainings and procedures.
- Engage with coworkers professionally, creatively, and constructively.
- Communicate regularly with supervisors.
- Adhere to residency site protocol and policies.
- Facilitate the creation and execution of end of unit sharing of student work
- Attend monthly professional development activities and periodic organization-wide events.
- Schedule and attend intermittent co-planning meetings with classroom teachers.
- Submit attendance rosters daily for each residency.
- Submit assessment/evaluation as needed
- Submit student success stories at the conclusion of each residency.
- Submit student surveys at the conclusion of each residency.
- Submit end of residency student outcomes
Required Qualifications:
- COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Previous teaching artist experience with diverse populations
- Able to travel to northern Manhattan
- A commitment to attend monthly professional development sessions
- Professional skills, training, and experience in one or more theatrical disciplines
- Commitment to, interest in, or experience with social justice initiatives
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
- Master’s Degree or equivalent experience
- 3+ years experience teaching in public school settings
- Bi/Multilingualism (especially Spanish)
- Experience with English Language Learners (ELLs)
- Peace-maker, Self-starter and problem-solver
- Timely communication
Salary and Benefits:

Application process (candidates MUST be available for the following dates):
- Demo Lesson with peers: July 13 or July 14 from 10am – 12pm or 2pm to 4 pm
- Off-Site Demo Lesson with youth: Either July 19, 20, 21
- Required TA Training (Start Date): Week of August 28- September 1; Additionally, all teaching artists are required to attend an Understanding and Undoing Racism Training facilitated by the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond during their first 3 months of employment.
