About the Queens Museum:

The Queens Museum is dedicated to presenting the highest quality visual arts and educational programming for people in the New York metropolitan area, and particularly for the residents of Queens, a uniquely diverse, ethnic, cultural, and international community.

The Museum fulfills its mission by designing and providing art exhibitions, public programs, and educational experiences that promote the appreciation and enjoyment of art, support the creative efforts of artists, and enhance the quality of life through interpreting, collecting, and exhibiting art, architecture, and design.

2022 Queens Museum Summer Camp:

For three weeks in July, aspiring artists ages 7-11 are invited to join us for art-making workshops, fun-themed games, and art-inspired activities. Each week offers a different theme and art activities. Campers can register for one or more weeks, with discounted registration rates for multiple weeks. Summer Family Programs:

For select weekends in June, July, and August the Queens Museum invites artists, thinkers, and makers of all ages, along with their families, to join us for drop-in art-making workshops centering exhibition themes and various art mediums.

Roles & Responsibilities

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Education Manager, the Camp & Family Programs Coordinator will join our team of artists, interns and Queens Museum staff in the collective pursuit of engaging in the “core qualities” of Queens Museum teaching and in responding sensitively to our diverse learners.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with QM staff to ensure mental and physical safety of all children, e.g. promoting safe affirming and inclusive learning communities, setting clear expectations and community norms, knowing the Museum’s emergency procedures, have camper emergency contacts
  • Plan both indoor and outdoor activities and games for campers in between daily art-making workshops. Coordinate a full week of camp schedules.
  • Assist lead Teaching Artist with daily art workshops during Summer Camp
  • Monitor campers to ensure compliance with camp rules and prevent accidents
  • Clean, maintain and ensure proper use of museum camp facilities and equipment.
  • Lead and support campers as they participate in age-appropriate activities
  • Report and record details of any incidents, such as accidents or rule violations, to the Education Manager or School Programs Coordinator
  • Supervise the camp interns with their daily job responsibilities and schedules.
  • Be an ambassador for the Queens Museum for all of our public, in addition to your direct responsibilities with campers. E.g. greet museum visitors, acknowledge parents and families, wear your ID Badge around the Museum, make eye contact and smile, when appropriate, share with museum visitors what you and your students are doing (or have your students do it)
  • Be professional, courteous and enthusiastic in representing the museum, be respectful, patient and understanding in tone and communication whether with youth, families, staff and the general public. Show up on time for session, meet agreed-upon expectations and deadlines, and communicate as soon as possible about challenges or changes
  • Family Program Weekend Workshops:
    • Plan fun art-making activities for families and participants of all ages to join in drop-in workshops on Saturdays and Sundays
    • Coordinate with other departments to reserve the workshop space, prepare signage, organize and order art materials, lay out and prepare art materials in advance of the workshop
    • Reset the space, cleaning up after the workshop.
    • Greet families entering the workshop space, facilitate art-making and assist participants.
    • Maintain an email/contact list for families wishing to sign up and learn about future programs 
    • Document the program through photographs and feedback
    • Report back to the education team after each program on attendance numbers, staff and participant feedback.
