Brooklyn Music School (BMS) is a community school for the performing arts, founded in 1910 as the Brooklyn Music School Settlement. The school was founded on the principal that performance and appreciation was an essential part of life, and who wished to spread music and performance to a broader audience of new Americans. Today, Brooklyn is a magnet for people from around the world, both musicians seeking new audiences and families seeking a better life. The organization continues to stay true to its heritage of building communities through the joy and appreciation of music. BMS owns and operates a historic four-story building in the Fort Greene neighborhood that contains twenty-four classrooms, three dance studios, and a professional 266-seat Spanish-style theatre founded in 1926. Brooklyn Music School is a long-standing member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. In recent years, Fort Greene has become recognized as a cultural hub of Brooklyn and the home to some of the most innovative music and performances in New York City.

• Work with the assigned Teaching Artist to develop lesson plans, brainstorm class structure, and execute lesson plans on a daily basis.
• Attend all Teaching Artist check-ins and debriefs, as scheduled with individual teaching artists.
• Maintain good communication and reliability throughout the internship.
• Approach all students with patience, kindness, and respect; communicating with lead Teaching Artists when in need of support, guidance, or assistance.
• Approach the internship with a positive attitude and willingness to learn and grow from experiences and feedback.
• Attend various check-ins with the internship coordinator and other interns
• Submit bi-weekly Friday Status reports
• Attend the Midway Check-in Meeting with the Internship Coordinator
• Attend Exit Interview
• Participate in all training programs required by New York State and New York City law including Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Sexual Harassment training.
• Follow all guidelines outlined in the BMS Employee Handbook.

• Gain hands-on student teacher experience under the guidance of seasoned teaching artist veterans. Interns will work with three different teaching artists in a variety of disciplines over two-week sessions (6 weeks total; 2 weeks per teaching artist), delivering high quality arts education experiences
• Develop teaching strategies by observing and assisting teaching artists, leading lessons and classes, and by receiving constructive criticism and feedback from teaching artists.
• Develop a variety of classroom management skills for students ages 5 -12.
• Learn to create and implement lesson plans, assess student progress, and work creatively within a curriculum to achieve student outcomes.
