A mission-based non-profit organization, the Apollo Theater is a commissioner and presenter; catalyst for new artists, audiences, and creative workforce; and partner in the projection of the African American narrative and its role in the development of American and global culture.
The Apollo envisions a new American canon centered on contributions to the performing arts by artists of the African diaspora, in America and beyond. About Apollo Education
The Apollo’s Education Department engages audiences of all ages through a variety of programs and events. These include workshops and residencies, tours, seminars, and synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning for K-12 and adult audiences; career exploration and youth development through the Apollo Theater Academy; and events dedicated to deepening the understanding of the arts and cultural contributions of peoples of the African diaspora.
School Programs
School Programs at the Apollo take place during the school day and during after-school hours and are focused on teaching and learning through the integration of the performing arts, media, and the humanities.
Programs in theater, dance, music, oral history, or media are designed to fit within the school community, highlighting the rich history of the Apollo and its connection to Harlem and African American culture, while also providing engagement in an artistic discipline.
Nearly 15,000 New York City K-12 students and teachers are served each year through our workshops, residencies, tours, performances, and online resources. As the Apollo is a world-renowned stage, school programs frequently link to larger initiatives including performances, festivals, and the Apollo New Works series.
Roles & Responsibilities
The following core tenets and teaching practices must be part of your teaching artistry to be considered as an Apollo Education Teaching Artist. You must also comply and complete all administrative duties, and submit all application materials requested.
Tenets
Commitment to Craft – Teaching Artists’ lessons uphold the standards and recommended practices of their chosen art form.
Curiosity – Teaching Artists employ inquiry-based methodologies to ensure participant engagement and ongoing assessment.
Reflective of the Mission – Centers the art, culture, and experiences of African Americans and those of the African Diaspora in teaching. Utilizing Black voices spanning different eras that have shaped culture.
Multidisciplinary – Lesson source materials span disciplines and when appropriate; lessons appeal to the multiple intelligences of the participant population to provide equity in learning.
Teaching Practices
- Thematic connections to Apollo Theater’s role in performance history, culture and to classroom curricula;
- Inquiry driven, hands-on art making activities in support of students’ self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and communication skills;
- Cultivation of space for students to explore all opportunities that are available; participation in the arts allows them to flex their creative muscles, build community, engage in decision-making, share their stories, and imagine their future;
- Teaching through the integration of the performing arts, media, and the humanities, as students experience the joy of artmaking and watching a performance;
- Uplifting unheard voices in through the arts and raising awareness for social justice.
Administrative
- Submits invoices, lesson plans, evaluation, and assessment materials upon request and in some cases, within 36 hours of the workshop or program.
- Responds to communication within 24 hours.
- Reads, refers to, and adheres to our Policies and Procedures.
- Attends scheduled meetings and trainings.
