Job Position Summary
The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society. The Public Programs & Community Engagement Coordinator (PPCE), under the supervision of the department’s Director, will oversee the coordination and production of the Museum’s public programs and community engagement initiatives for adult audiences. This includes, but is not limited to artist talks, panel discussions, thematic tours, hands-on workshops, community events, film screenings and literary events. They serve as the primary point of contact for administrative communications between the department and collaborators both inside and outside the Museum.
Roles & Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
General Administration
- Facilitating external communications, including community, participant, and partner outreach
- Liaising between finance and program partners to coordinate participant contracts and forms
- Collaborating with other Museum departments—including Curatorial, Communications, and Operations—to enact administrative workflows related to researching, promoting, and executing public programs
- Maintaining the team calendar, producing meeting agendas, and coordinating both on- and off-site meetings where appropriate
Program Coordination
- Coordinating logistics for all public programs, community engagement initiatives, and special projects including production checklists, event and program copy, work orders, Communications support requests, walkthroughs and run-of-shows
- Serving as internal point of contact during programs and events, troubleshooting with IT and Operations where necessary
- Sustaining and tracking ongoing conversations with artists, community partners, and other collaborators
- Supporting in the research, development and execution of all core programs, special projects and initiatives
- Collaborating with Communications to create promotional materials across platforms and coordinate strategic marketing strategies
Project Management
- Supports seasonal fellows and interns by facilitating experiential learning opportunities within the department
- Point person for departmental communications when the director is out of the office
- Point person for producing program evaluations for participants, visitors and facilitators
- Represents the department and its priorities during interdepartmental meetings
- Participates in professional development opportunities and reports back to the team
Travel Requirements: YES – 11-25% travel required
Physical Demands: YES – Transportation of program supplies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Master’s degree, preferably in Africana Studies, Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Public/Urban Policy, Sociology, Adult Education, Anthropology or a related field. Those with a BA and significant work experience and certifications will also be considered.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in the museum/art field with demonstrated experience in project management, program administration, coordination, and production
- Experience in Community organizing
- Independent problem-solver able to see the bigger picture and structure/systematize tasks and priorities appropriately
- Respectful attitude, philanthropic drive, team spirit, and a willingness to share ideas and learn on the job
- Attention to detail, highly organized, multi-tasker with strong time management skills
- Excellent research skills with an eagerness to continually learn more
- Ability to collaborate openly and effectively, while actively engaging one’s own responsibilities at all levels of production
- Flexibility, adaptability and resourcefulness
- Creativity and open-mindedness
- Advanced interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent computer skills, particularly in MS platforms including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams
- Experience running Zoom webinars and meetings
- Available nights and weekends as required to deliver the public programs calendar of events
Desired:
- Experience with Raiser’s Edge and Online Express
- Familiarity with video and sound editing platforms
