About Our Organization
Behind the Book is a literacy non-profit that serves students in Title l NYC public schools. Working with classrooms from Pre-K-12, BTB identifies books that reflect the lives of our students and partners with teachers to create immersive curriculum units. Through a series of workshops, authors discuss their book and teach a genre of writing, encouraging students to see themselves as readers and writers and ultimately guiding them in the creation and publication of their own original writing.
Job Position Summary
Behind the Book seeks a freelance Facilitator to run innovative reading and writing programs in schools. Our goals include engaging students in reading, increasing writing skills, and increasing intrinsic motivation for literacy. Every program is built around a book and its author and is designed in partnership with the classroom teacher. The facilitator coordinates with Behind the Book staff to understand program curriculum and logistics before bringing each workshop to life in the classroom. Facilitator must be vaccinated to enter classroom, per government mandate.
As an hourly position ($60/hour), the commitment will include: 1 to 2-hour weekly meeting, monthly professional development and/ BtB community gatherings, regular work hours based on (1) available program contracts and (2) facilitator’s ability to schedule workshops during school day hours.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Conduct classroom workshops to engage students with the BTB program
- Prepare necessary materials for workshops
- Collaborate and manage communication with partnering classroom teacher and BTB team
- Schedule workshop times as needed for programs
- Timely submission of program data on Airtable
- Manage collection of forms for programs, such as student photo releases, teacher agreements, surveys, etc.
- Document and reflect on program successes and challenges as part of our ongoing performance measurement system
