Originally known as Dance Theatre Etcetera, DTE achieved national acclaim for making the arts a critical component of urban renewal as well as its recovery efforts in Red Hook, Brooklyn. As the organization evolved, DTE rebranded as Hook Arts Media. This new identity reflects its focus on creative learning for community change, incorporating 21st-century technology into its arts education programs.

Hook Arts Media’s in-school multidisciplinary media and arts programs primarily serve NYC transfer high schools. Its community programs focus on digital media and computer literacy, preparing young people with college and/or career-readiness skills.

Job Position Summary

Now Hiring: Podcast Teaching Artist

Hook Arts Media is seeking an experienced audio production educator for an afterschool, community-based program.

HAM’s In Transition: Media program provides students with video production skills to give young people the tools to tell their stories as they engage in critical investigations of self and society. Participating students will range from ages 14-25 and will vary in levels of expertise and interest in creating media. The ideal candidate will have experience and/or interest in building community and motivation amongst students.

In Spring 2022, HAM will be offering a program focusing on podcasting with youth-centered social justice commentary and storytelling. All sessions will be taught using students’ cell phones as well as some audio equipment and audio programs made available to students to use onsite at Hook Arts Media facility.

All sessions will be taught in person on-site at Hook Arts Media’s offices in Red Hook, Brooklyn. HAM has extensive film and audio production equipment and computers available for student use.

HAM seeks an instructor with experience in podcasting/audio recording and editing.

Roles & Responsibilities

Experience

The ideal candidate will have significant experience (3+ years) facilitating audio production curricula to teens in public school settings or community-based media programs. Strong classroom facilitation skills, a strong commitment to equity and inclusion, a good sense of humor and facility with audio equipment and audio editing programs is mandatory. Experience in multi-disciplinary arts settings including performing arts is preferred. Candidate should have previous experience in teaching podcasting to teens.

This position is only open to candidates based in the NYC Metro area.

Pay is commensurate with experience and starts at $75/hour.

Positions starting March-May 2022: Tues 4 pm-6 pm, Sat 1 pm-4 pm.
