Spoons Across America brings free and low-cost food education and nutrition programs to families, schools, and community-based organizations across the country.

Job Position Summary

Spoons Across America is seeking a once a week, part-time creative and dynamic Nutrition-based Educational Specialist. She/He/They will report to and work closely with the Program Manager to advance the mission and reach of the organization. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in education, nutrition, and children’s health. General responsibilities are outlined below.

Job Description
Education Specialist needed for an afterschool program located in Alphabet City in New York City to teach once a week on Friday afternoons for an 12-week residency block starting on October 11.

Responsibilities:
-Teach hands-on lessons and activities around taste exploration, healthy cooking, and nutrition to 1st-5th grade children in an afterschool program
-Support children with kitchen skills and safety in food preparation
-Set up and clean up all lesson materials
-Communicate and work with site staff as required
-Purchase fresh food for classroom lessons in local stores weekly; dry good supplies will be stored on site
-Maintain regular communication with the Program Manager regarding program implementation, outcomes, and site staff
-Participate in an ongoing evaluation of programming

Qualifications:
-Experience teaching or implementing hands-on nutrition-based and cooking activity programs with elementary school-age children
-Bachelor’s degree or pursuing a degree in education, nutrition, food studies, culinary arts, or related field is helpful
-Passion and enthusiasm for the mission of Spoons Across America
-Superb communication and classroom management skills
-Highly organized, responsible, dependable, flexible, patient, and detail oriented
-Awareness of and sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic of populations that we serve and comfortable working with diverse populations
-Able to work independently and as part of a team and with site staff to promote the mission of Spoons Across America
-A dynamic personality with a good sense of humor and appreciation for cooking, education, and healthy, local food.
-Computer proficiency, including Google Calendar and Docs
-Able to lift 25-30 lbs.

Pay range $40-$50 hourly for 5 hours per week
