Job Position Summary

Roles & Responsibilities

PRIMARY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops curriculum, schedule, repertoire plan, and metrics of student success in collaboration with teaching faculty, OSL staff, students, and families.
  • Supervises YOSL teaching artists and OSL visiting coaches.
  • Supervises and collaborates with the Youth Programs Coordinator in:
    • Coordination of each teaching site’s daily schedules and needs;
    • Maintenance of rented and donated musical instruments for student use along with a library of music and educational materials;
    • Communication with parents about student progress and challenges;
    • Engaging students’ families more deeply in the program.
  • Manages YOSL’s payroll, invoices, and cash flow.
  • Coordinates in- and after-school YOSL programs through joint performances; collaborates with other youth orchestra programs that exist in NYC.
  • Visits YOSL sites on a regular basis to support and evaluate teaching faculty and continue to develop relationships between YOSL and partner school administrators.
  • Leads weekly faculty meetings to maintain cohesion between programs at all sites, emphasize YOSL’s mission, share best-practices to maximize student creativity, and develop competency in Social-Emotional-Learning.
  • Keeps and updates database and tracking of student, program, and faculty statistics, sharing this information with OSL’s Development Department and Education Committee.
  • Maintains communication via email and/or phone with YOSL faculty about important program updates and opportunities.
  • Works with partner school administrations to recruit new YOSL students for each new school year.
  • Supports the Director of Education and Community Engagement in strategic planning and execution of strategic plans.
  • Supports the Education and Community Engagement team as needed.

WHO YOU ARE

Essential Qualifications

  • A minimum of a four-year undergraduate college degree and three years of relevant professional experience in an arts organization or school working in arts education.
  • Experience managing staffs.
  • Exceptional communication: interpersonal, written language skills, as well as excellent telephone demeanor.
  • Experience working with school music teachers/teaching artists, parents, and students.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend rehearsals, performances, and other program activities.
  • Ability to take initiative, as both a self-motivator and team player.

Strongly Preferred

  • Familiarity with music education pedagogies and the culture of youth orchestras and/or community music schools.
  • Experience developing age-appropriate strategies to engage children at different stages through music.
  • Excellent skills in Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Zoom.

Preferred

  • Knowledge and interest in El Sistema and other youth music programs.
  • Experience playing a musical instrument/ability to read music.
  • Ability to tune stringed instruments (specifically violins and cellos).
  • Genuine interest (or expertise) in a variety of musical traditions and ability to seek ways to diversify the musical experiences of young musicians.
  • Knowledge of state and national learning standards.
  • Ability to speak Spanish or Mandarin—a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Use of an office phone, computer and internet is required.
  • Open working space.
  • A cell phone and remote access to e-mail and office files are strongly recommended, as many tasks take place offsite.
  • Manager will regularly visit school sites in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, generally by walking or bus.
  • Ability to carry instruments between sites.
  • On some occasions, it may be necessary for the Manager of Youth Programs to participate in program activities in support of the teaching faculty, which may include: assisting with student coaching; playing an instrument, leading music games, etc.
  • For documentation purposes, it may be necessary to take pictures or record classes.

  • Compensation: $50,000 – $60,000 yearly
