Little Island is a beautiful, welcoming, and unique public park and public art space located in Hudson River Park at 13th/14th St. With its one-of-a-kind design and dynamic offerings and experiences, Little Island invites all New Yorkers to experience a public space that is designed to ignite imagination, foster spontaneity and play, and support camaraderie and connection. Little Island relies on its dedicated staff to deliver this experience and cultivate a public space that is welcoming for all to enjoy.

Job Position Summary

Little Island seeks outgoing and energetic individuals to be members of our Usher Corps program. Reporting to the Youth Development Associate, Ushers play a key role in fostering a hospitable, welcoming, and inclusive environment for visitors and audience members, performing front of house duties for performances, and serving as Little Island representatives for the public. A successful Usher has a passion for engaging with people, an interest in public art and public spaces, and is an enthusiastic collaborator who enjoys working outdoors. Candidates who can converse in multiple languages (including but not limited to Spanish, Mandarin, American Sign Language, etc.) are encouraged to apply.

In addition to fulfilling their job responsibilities, Ushers are invited to attend seminars and career/life-skills workshops throughout the season. These seminars and workshops are dedicated to enhancing personal and professional skills, and support learning in: Leadership, Financial Capability, Public Art, Public Space, and Communication.

This program is designed for people who are New York state residents age 18-26

  • Hourly Rate: $17/hour
  • Job Type: Temporary
  • Schedule Expectations: Ushers will work evenings, weekends, and select early afternoons in support of the artistic programming calendar, typically working Wednesday-Sunday. All ushers are expected to be available for a minimum of three shifts per week
  • Projected Start Date: Week of May 30th, 2022
  • Projected End Date: Week of September 26th, 2022
  • Employment Duration: If employed in a temporary position, candidates should note that they will need to reapply for any future positions and there is no presumption for rehire or reoccurring employment in subsequent seasons.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Foster a safe and welcoming environment for Little Island’s visitors and audience members during artistic programs and events. Responsibilities include:
    • Monitoring capacity and flow of traffic from visitors, setting up stanchions, checking tickets, and monitoring queues as necessary
    • Understanding Little Island’s programming and schedule of events and sharing information and opportunities to engage with the art
    • Authentically engaging with visitors, asking questions and building meaningful connections surrounding our programming
    • Clearing park visitors from performance spaces before and after a performance, or during an evacuation
    • Light clearing of trash left in the programming area
    • Setting up stanchions and queues, and monitoring flow and capacity
  • Know and communicate basic knowledge about Little Island, including park access points, park rules, background and historical information, and performance and programming details
  • Participate in both mandatory and optional professional development workshops, check-in meetings, and other learning opportunities hosted by the Education and Community Relations department
  • Other duties and tasks related to the park and its operations as assigned
