High School to Art School is a free visual arts portfolio development program that provides qualified high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with the art skills training and college application assistance to gain acceptance into competitive art college. The program runs three times a year, with an introduction to observational drawing in the Spring; an ‘intensive’ art-making session in the Summer; and a Fall Session focused on guiding students through the college application process. Job Position Summary
Overview
Queens Council on the Arts is seeking one teaching artist to co-teach the organization’s High School to Art School (HS2AS) Program for its Spring 2022 Session. The Spring 2022 Session will run on Saturdays from March 19 – June 4, 2022, from 10am – 3pm. The co-teaching artist will be responsible for instructing 21 rising high school juniors and seniors.
Job Description
- Co-teach the Spring 2022 Session of High School to Art School; classes consist of 5-hour sessions on Saturdays for a total of 9 classes.
- Interview prospective program candidates via portfolio reviews on March 4,5 & 8
- Design and lead college-level observational drawing instruction in class and develop weekly homework assignments to emphasize class content.
- Co-plan exercises and activities to augment students’ drawing practice in collaboration with Co-teacher.
- Provide high school students with high quality arts skills training including portfolio development, mentorship opportunities to enable them to compete for admission to distinguished art programs in colleges, universities, and art schools.
- Provide curriculum development, recommendations, documentation of artwork, student critiques, and select field trips to NYC arts and cultural institutions for students.
- Document classroom activities and development, as well as field trips and class work.
- Co-lead students on field trips while planning and directing activities in response to the exhibitions.
All classes will be held in Long Island City, Queens. Upon successful completion of the Spring 2022 Session, there will be an opportunity to move into a permanent part-time position teaching future HS2AS cohorts in Summer and Fall 2022.
Salary & Scope of Work
- Anticipated start date: March 1st
- This is a W2, seasonal employee position
- Teaching artists will be compensated at $60/hour for all work (instruction and planning) as well as time spent conducting supplemental administrative and communications work on an as-needed basis
- The projected hourly scope for each of the 3 program sessions are as follows. This include contact hours in the classroom as well as prep:
- Spring – 9 hours/week for 9 weeks of class
- Summer – 24 hours/week for 6 weeks of class
- Fall/Winter – 11 hours/week for 17.5 weeks of class

Qualifications & Eligibility
- Must show proof they have received at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
- Live within a commuting distance to Long Island City, Queens
- Demonstrated experience (at least 2 years) teaching high school students in an art classroom setting, especially juniors and seniors
- 2 years experience planning and facilitating observational drawing lessons, assessments and projects
- Comfort working with and instructing nude models in a live classroom setting.
- Ability to order & manage studio art supplies, drawing media and change the space of the classroom
- Comfort managing a classroom of up to 21 high school students, as well as productive collaboration and role-sharing with a co-teacher
- Deep knowledge of contemporary visual arts practices, as well as the art school application process/what makes a competitive portfolio
- Highly organized and effective verbal and written communicator
- Ability to liaise and remotely communicate with administrative programming staff to address the needs of the program
- A passion for providing arts access, cultural representation, and secondary education
- Must be available for all Spring class sessions and student interview dates (1-2 absences acceptable upon discussion)
- Class Dates : 03/19, 03/26, 04/2, 04/09, 04/30, 05/07, 05/14, 05/21, 06/04
- Student Interviews : March 4,5 & 8th over Zoom
- The ideal candidate will be interested and available to continue teaching work for the Summer & Fall 2022 HS2AS Sessions
- Preference will be given to Queens-based teaching artists and High School to Art School alumni

Selection Process
This is a 2-round hiring process:
- Qualified candidates will be invited to attend an interview over Zoom with High School to Art School Program Co- Managers.
- Finalists will be invited to teach a live 30-minute class demo with current High School to Art School students in February at our classroom in Long Island City.
