La Familia Project is intercultural community based year round Sports, Arts, & Wellness programming for youth, young adults, and seniors. LFP embodies the ethos of “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind,” aiming to offer free enrichment programming, wellness initiatives, and mental health resources to underserved communities throughout NYC through our citywide partnerships.
Job Position Summary
Roles & Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of the LFP’s Art programming director, Teaching Artists co-colloborate and propose and develop culturally connected course ideas, prepare course materials, and then lead students through high quality course objectives.
- Teaching Artists implement skill-based learning to inspire their students to innovate, think critically, express themselves, find joy in the process of making, and to help them achieve their learning goals.
- Generate class ideas and course descriptions based off our general course structure.
- Select and plan appropriate activities and content for all class sessions aligned with LFP mission and curriculum focus.
- Create, lesson plans that outline learning objectives and outline clear expectations for class and students.
- Ensure that all spaces and classes are safe, welcoming, and inclusive to all participants.
- Communicate clearly, empathetically, and respectfully with all students.
- Lead classes through teaching techniques that demonstrate clarity, generosity, and creativity and encourage students to grow.
Qualifications
- Cover letter required
- Optional – A proposal for the class/workshop you are interested in teaching.
- Optional – Sample lesson plan
- Optional – Have experience working with systems involved young folks and asylum seekers.
- Optional – (But Preferred) Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Minimum of 2 years of professional teaching experience in a youth or adult education setting, particularly with youth.
- Ability to differentiate teaching to learners of diverse abilities and levels
- Looking for a facilitator who can bridge the gap between social media platforms (like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat) and art and storytelling when it comes to the development and creation of the art, basic tools, and practices to enhance these social spaces.
- Strong classroom management skills and ability to present information in an engaging, interactive way as this is afterschool.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- Commitment to lifelong learning and willingness to reflect and refine their practice
- A passion to provide valuable and engaging workshops to groups often excluded from the tech and visual art spaces, and thereby help close the access gap in these fields.
