About Our Organization
IMPACCT Brooklyn is a dynamic neighborhood-based organization. We combine community organizing, tenant and homeowner services, affordable housing development and management, and economic development to improve Brooklyn.
Pratt Area Community Council, Inc. dba IMPACCT Brooklyn, is a community development corporation founded in 1964 by civic-minded leaders, faith-based and tenant and block associations determined to protect the rights of residents and improve their lives through decent affordable housing, tenant rights, asset building and economic renewal. In 2014, IMPACCT expanded its target area to include the entire borough of Brooklyn and contiguous areas, with particular emphasis on Central Brooklyn.
IMPACCT is governed by a 19-member Board of Directors, and currently operates in three locations. The organization has an annual operating budget of approximately $6MM and a staff of 35 +/- employees. The Executive Director leads an executive management team that includes the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Program Officer, and Chief Development Officer.
Key Pointers
IMPACCT Brooklyn pursues its mission through four key programs:
- Affordable Housing: A well-respected affordable housing developer, IMPACCT has developed more than 1,000 units of housing in 91 buildings including supportive housing, multifamily apartments and 1-4 family homes. The organization has an expertise as a marketing and administrative agent for the New York Housing Lottery Process. Currently the organization has four projects in its development pipeline.
- Homeowner Services and Financial Capability: IMPACCT Brooklyn is subcontracted by NYS to provide home counseling. The counseling staff is HUD certified. Recognizing that many residents are not ready to become homeowners, IMPACCT has expanded these services to include financial capability programs to assist households in improving their credit and debt profile. Through counseling and assistance, the average client has reduced his/her debt by 35%, saving between $200 – $2,000 annually.
- Tenant Services and Community Organizing: IMPACCT Brooklyn’s roots began in tenant organizing, which today remains an essential part of its mission; reducing the displacement of residents caused by unfair evictions and harassment, and addressing unsafe and unhealthy living conditions in low income communities. Through its efforts, IMPACCT Brooklyn has been able to educate tenants as well as organize tenant associations, empowering more than 700 people annually to challenge landlords, prevent illegal evictions and improve their quality of life.
- Economic Renewal: IMPACCT Brooklyn is engaged in the economic renewal of Brooklyn’s commercial corridors in targeted communities supporting 3 merchant associations and offers a range of services to small businesses. IMPACCT is supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners with legal and financial resources and is directly helping over 30 new businesses annually to open their doors.
