Job Position Summary
The National Book Foundation (NBF) is seeking a full-time Education Programs Manager. Working closely with NBF’s Deputy Director and other programs staff, the Education Programs Manager will provide essential support for NBF’s slate of Education & Access programs. The ideal candidate is an experienced program administrator with a strong understanding of arts and cultural education, including experience with managing partnerships, working with teaching staff, event planning, and accompanying administrative responsibilities. While this position does not include teaching, the ideal candidate will have some prior experience teaching/facilitating programs for K-12 learners.
As a member of a small, dynamic team, the Education Programs Manager works on all components of Education & Access programs from soup to nuts: development, planning, implementation, maintenance, documentation, and evaluation. In service of NBF’s mission to expand the audience for literature and ensure that books have a prominent place in American culture, all Education & Access programs focus on the love of books, the development of lifelong reading habits, and access to books regardless of where the reader is situated geographically, economically, racially, or otherwise. Programs include: Book Rich Environments, a large-scale book giveaway program that serves public housing communities across the country; BookUp, a direct service after-school reading program; and Teen Press Conference, an annual National Book Awards event for teens.
The start date for this position is early July 2022. This is a full-time position based in New York City, though may begin remotely for a temporary period to accommodate candidates who are not currently local. Some evening and weekend work is required; some travel is required.
Compensation: This is a full-time exempt position based in New York City (with a flexible in-office/remote hybrid schedule) and benefits package, including paid time off, health care, and other benefits. Salary is $56,000-$62,000 depending on experience.
Roles & Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support existing programs that serve a diverse set of audiences, including: families, young people, and adults
- Work collaboratively with the Deputy Director and programs staff in the development and implementation of any new education programming, per the Foundation’s new strategic plan
- Track programmatic timelines and benchmarks, and manage systems around program logistics, expenses, schedules and calendars, and documentation
- Serve as the lead point person for contractual Teaching Artists, including hiring, training, and review of any TA-generated materials
- Manage relationships with local NYC partners and national partners including community-based organizations, schools, government agencies, and non-profit colleague organizations; cultivate new partner relationships when relevant
- Manage NBF’s internship program, including screening applicants, coordinating mentorship opportunities, and liaising with university partners
- Plan and attend education program events (both in-person and virtual) including careful collaboration with authors, presenting partners, and producers; represent the Foundation at programmatic events as needed
- Generate and track program documents such as partner agreements, Teaching Artist training materials, promotional flyers, and anthologies of student work; develop curricular materials for use in direct service programs
- Work with NBF’s Director of Technology and Communications & Marketing Manager to ensure that all public-facing education program information is accurately represented and up-to-date
- Collaborate with the Deputy Director and Director of Development in compiling program details for use in fundraising appeals and grant reporting
- Organize and track supplies and materials, including a large volume of book orders, donations, and shipments
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: We are looking for applicants with at least 3-5 years in arts and cultural education, with outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple, simultaneous projects under deadlines. Applicants should have experience working with diverse communities and audiences, and demonstrated experience working specifically with young people and/or K-12 students and educators is required. The Education Programs Manager should possess a contagious love for books and reading, and a genuine interest in NBF’s mission and values.
