The New York Philharmonic connects with up to 50 million music lovers each season through live concerts in New York and around the world, as well as broadcasts, recordings, and education programs. The 2022–23 season marks a new chapter in the life of America’s longest living orchestra with the opening of the reimagined David Geffen Hall and programming that engages with today’s cultural conversations through explorations of HOME, LIBERATION, SPIRIT, and EARTH, in addition to the premieres of 16 works. This marks the return from the pandemic, when the NY Phil launched NY Phil Bandwagon, presenting free performances across the city, and 2021–22 concerts at other New York City venues.
Job Position Summary
The New York Philharmonic seeks a Director of Very Young Composers (VYC) and Community Programs as part of the Education team. This position will lead the New York Philharmonic’s VYC program and the VYC Teaching and Artist Faculty as well as working with the Education team to deepen the impact of this program which has a global reach.
Responsibilities:
- Bring experience as a composer to bear on the vision of the program through residencies, performances, and partnerships.
- Produces performances and manages projects both locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Overall program administration and communications with VYC teaching artists, NY Phil staff, musicians and ensembles, NYC school partners and families.
- Organizes teaching artist professional development, in coordination with education team and Lead Teaching Artist faculty.
- Hire, onboard, support, and evaluate Teaching Artist faculty, visiting ensembles and consultants as necessary; oversee development of all related activities.
- Cultivate and sustain partnerships with schools, community-based organizations, and other affiliates nationally and internationally.
- Collaborate with Development Department on identifying funding opportunities.
- With VYC Advisor, manage joint projects with VYC affiliates in the US and abroad.
- Assist as necessary in department-wide productions and events and collaborate with other departments of the Philharmonic as required.
- Support the development of community centered programming that engages audience members of all ages. Program includes the Philharmonic’s wellness initiative, Take a Breath, and other opportunities, in collaboration with our community partners.
- A commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Creative and strategic leader with knowledge of music composition and extensive classroom experience. Significant experience supervising programs and in managing budgets. Excellent oral and written communications, public presentation, and interpersonal skills.

The New York Philharmonic Very Young Composers Program® (VYC) — founded by Jon Deak (composer and former New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Bass) — is a program that celebrates children’s creativity by providing them with the tools they need to transform their musical ideas into finished compositions. Students are encouraged to use composing as a tool for self-expression and discovery, eventually hearing their original musical works rehearsed and performed by professional soloists, ensembles, and sometimes the full Orchestra!
