About Our Organization
Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musicals, seeks a full time Director of Education. Founded in 1970, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by contemporary American and international playwrights. MTC produces up to eight plays annually in Broadway’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on West 47th Street and off-Broadway at the historic NY City Center complex on West 55th Street.
Job Position Summary
Manhattan Theatre Club’s Director of Education oversees a multi-faceted operation that annually serves more than 3,000 individuals through an array of dynamic, innovative programs, including short- and long-term in-school residencies, theatre-going experiences, career and professional development offerings, family programming, community engagement initiatives, and customized one-off workshops. Founded in 1989, MTC Education was the first education program created by a major New York theatre company and remains a standard of excellence for the field.
Rooted in the tenets of aesthetic education, with equity, diversity, and inclusion as a core value, the department has remained true to its founding idea: enabling learners of all ages to see plays and to write plays. We teach young people and adults how to experience MTC plays fully and we inspire and guide them to write plays of their own as a means of deepening their understanding of themselves and the world. MTC Education annually collaborates with approximately fifty schools of all kinds, locally and—through TheatreLink, our distance-learning program—across the country and around the world. We have particularly sought out schools in communities that have historically lacked access to arts and cultural opportunities. In recent years, we have launched a community engagement initiative that partners with agencies that provide programs and support for young people who have experienced systemic inequities.
The Director of Education’s chief responsibility is to define, sustain, and, as needed, refine and modify MTC Education’s underlying mission, vision, and core values. A successful candidate will serve as a team leader, collaborating authentically with Education staff and teaching artists to maintain existing programs at the highest level of quality, while encouraging imaginative thinking that will lead to new approaches and innovative programmatic ideas.
Roles & Responsibilities
Specific areas of responsibility include developing curriculum; recruiting teaching artists and providing professional development to the teaching artist faculty; developing and sustaining relationships with partner schools, current and potential; creating the department’s annual budget; reporting to the board of directors on the program’s progress and prospects; and collaborating with the MTC Development Office on grant proposals, reports, and donor cultivation.
The Director will lead and supervise the Associate Education Director, Education Programs Manager, and the Education Trainee, each responsible for the several programs in their respective portfolios. The Director of Education serves as a sounding board and adviser for each program, while assuming final responsibility for all the programs’ successful implementation.
The ideal candidate will:
- Be an empathetic, consensus-building leader, willing to listen and learn from permanent staff and teaching artists, while shaping and guiding MTC Education toward its goals in keeping with its mission, vision, and core values.
- Have at least eight years’ experience in managerial roles in the not-for-profit arts or arts education field
- Be able to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing
