Job Position Summary

Position Overview
Hook Arts Media (HAM) seeks a strategic, mission-driven Director of Education to lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of all school-based and community-based arts education programs. The Director provides visionary leadership across program development, teaching artist support, evaluation, budget planning, and external partnerships. As a senior team member, the Director of Education plays a vital role in advancing HAM’s commitment to equity, youth empowerment, and arts for social change, helping to expand the organization’s reach and deepen its impact in NYC public schools and community-based organizations (CBOs).

Roles & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
Program Planning & Oversight (30%)

  • Lead and manage all HAM school-based and community-based arts education programming
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Director to expand programming the nimber of schools per academic year
  • Act as the primary liaison with partner schools and CBOs, including meeting with principals and faculty
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and teaching artists to design and implement in-school, after-school, and community arts programs
  • Develop systems and forms for collecting and tracking both qualitative and quantitative metrics and feedback

Budgeting & Administration (15%)

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to create and manage program budgets
  • Ensure programs remain within budget and align with organizational goals
  • Assist with pricing educational programs for schools and CBO clients and integrate budgets into the organizational budget
  • Prepare school Letters of Agreement, teaching artist contracts, and submit related invoices
  • Monitor teaching artist timesheets and assist with semi-monthly payroll

Teaching Artist Support & Professional Development (15%)

  • Oversee the recruitment, onboarding, and training of teaching artists, ensuring all paperwork and compliance are completed
  • Plan and facilitate professional development workshops for teaching artists
  • Supervise Program Evaluators

Program Evaluation & Reporting (15%)

  • Track all program schedules and performances and add them to HAM’s calendar
  • Monitor program outcomes, collect relevant data (e.g., attendance, rosters, class pass rates), and compile reports
  • Conduct program visits each semester to support assessment efforts
  • Collect and archive assessment documents, including exit surveys and final reports, for use in grants and organizational reporting

Documentation & Marketing (10%)

  • Schedule and oversee the documentation (photo and video) of all education programs
  • Ensure adequate materials are captured for use in grant applications and work samples
  • Manage placement and upkeep of signage at all program sites
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Director on educational content for newsletters, e-blasts, and the website
  • Assist in advocacy efforts and marketing of educational programs
  • Collect student contact information and ensure alumni data is maintained in HAM’s Airtable database
  • Plan and implement annual alumni gatherings

Outreach & Representation (10%)

  • Represent HAM at conferences, network meetings, community partner events, and education panels
  • Identify and cultivate opportunities for new educational programming in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Conduct outreach to schools and organizations to develop partnerships and expand the organization’s profile

Performance & Special Event Support (5%)

  • Coordinate student and teaching artist participation in special events such as Red Hook Fest and the Red Hook Fest Kick-Off
  • Support youth group outreach for educational performances tied to performance programming

Events & Professional Development

The Director of Education will participate in key organizational events such as fundraisers, Red Hook Fest, student showcases, and seasonal gatherings as part of their regular duties. The Director may also attend or request relevant professional development opportunities.
