Originally known as Dance Theatre Etcetera, DTE achieved national acclaim for making the arts a critical component of urban renewal as well as its recovery efforts in Red Hook, Brooklyn. As the organization evolved, DTE rebranded as Hook Arts Media. This new identity reflects its focus on creative learning for community change, incorporating 21st-century technology into its arts education programs.

Hook Arts Media’s in-school multidisciplinary media and arts programs primarily serve NYC transfer high schools. Its community programs focus on digital media and computer literacy, preparing young people with college and/or career readiness skills.

Job Position Summary

Hook Arts Media Seeks Community Engagement Coordinator

Hook Arts Media (HAM) is a dynamic community-based cultural organization located in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

HAM seeks a part-time Community Engagement Coordinator to foster and nourish community relationships, spread awareness of HAM mission and programming, support event planning, and attend Red Hook events.

Roles & Responsibilities

The Community Engagement Coordinator is a part-time position from February – December 2023 and will be an essential member of the Red Hook Fest planning, promotion, and production process. The 30th Annual Red Hook Fest will take place during the first weekend of June 2023 with events throughout the weekend in Red Hook, Brooklyn. In addition to live performances, the festival will feature a community resource fair, free activities, and a community cookout and DJ dance party.

The Community Engagement Coordinator will take support pre-festival planning by attending monthly production meetings with festival staff, coordinating the community resource fair, supervising a grassroots promotion team, attending important civic meetings to discuss the festival, and supporting event promotion efforts. Additionally, the Coordinator will recruit, train, and supervise Festival volunteers.

Following the festival, the Community Engagement Coordinator will participate in meetings, coordinate events, spread awareness of HAM’s programming and mission, recruit local students for community-based programs, and attend events, as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has 3+ years of professional, volunteer, or advocacy experience in community organizing, written and verbal communication, and event production. Facilitation, management, nonprofit or political, and administrative experience are highly desirable.

Required skills include some computer/digital literacy: Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and social media. The Community Engagement Coordinator must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and independently. Multilingual candidates and those with a deep familiarity with Red Hook, Brooklyn are encouraged to apply.

Position starts in February 2023

Part-time approximately 7+ hours per week with additional hours as needed around Red Hook Fest and other events.
