Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21) is the premier East Harlem-based performing ensemble and non-profit community organization. LP21 was founded in 1983 by Juan J. ‘Juango’ Gutiérrez (National Endowment for the Arts’ Heritage Fellow, 1996) and the legendary Master Plenero, Marcial Reyes Arvelo. The ensemble has pioneered the road for Bomba and Plena performance around NYC, and continues to spread it globally for over 40 years.
Job Position Summary
Los Pleneros de la 21, a New York City nonprofit organization, is looking for an experienced bookkeeper to support its financial tracking and management needs. Los Pleneros de la 21 is a small organization consisting of part-time staff (2), and a roster of per diem artists and consultants (approximately 24). Public programs including tuition/registration based programs run approximately 10 months in the year, while performances/contracted engagements are managed year-round (with peak seasons running from September – November, April – June).
This is a fully remote contract through July 31, 2027 with opportunity for continuation and expansion. The bookkeeper will be expected to manage deliverables and timelines independently, following bookkeeping systems developed by Los Pleneros and nonprofit accounting regulations.
Roles & Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include:
- Manage/implement the end-to-end operations of the accounts payable and receivables processes
- Transaction recording and reconciliation, categorization and filing
- Create and pay bills and vendors (accounts payable)
- Create and issue invoices to customers (program participants, contracted revenues), reconcile payments (accounts receivable)
- Oversight of semimonthly Payroll (managed by 3rd party) and payments to consultants
- Ensure all payments are processed accurately, in a timely manner, and in compliance with organizational policies and nonprofit regulations.
- Record and reconcile bank and credit accounts and transactions (monthly basis)
- Track restricted and unrestricted funds
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records
- Compile and prepare financial statements and class-based budget reporting (Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)
- Prepare financial reports using Cash and Accrual accounting, including: POS reconciliations, donations contributions, grant project-based budget reporting, Board finance reports
- Transaction Recording, Categorization, and Filing: Sorting all revenues and expenses, managing cashflow and program allocation calculations
- Assist with grant tracking and reporting requirements
- Work in partnership with Organization leadership for grant reporting, project and organizational budget development
- Prepare documentation and coordinate with Accountant for financial reporting, Independent Auditor Report and annual tax filings
- Work in tandem with Organization leadership to record and report on individual and private donor receivables
- Support quarterly and annual earnings reportings (ie: NYS-45, 1099 and W2 reporting) with support of 3rd party vendor.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience with bookkeeping and accounts payable (3-5 years preferred), priority: nonprofit accounting and bookkeeping
- Demonstrated proficiency with Quickbooks Online
- Experience with Excel, Google Workspace, Zeffy, paypal
- Ability to maintain client confidentiality and security of financial data
- Understanding of class-based and accrual nonprofit principals
- Understanding of US GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
- Familiarity with New York nonprofit compliance requirements
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Experience working with performing arts and cultural nonprofit organizations.
- Bilingual Spanish speaking a plus
