The Armory’s Arts Education Program immerses students from New York City public schools in the creative process of world-class artists and fosters students’ own creative instincts. The program has three main initiatives: 1) Production-based Programming, in which students experience works of music, theater, dance, and visual art, and participate in workshops with Teaching Artists; 2) Partner Schools, in which deeper relationships with schools are created through customized residencies and creative opportunities; and 3) the Armory Youth Corps, a paid and closely mentored internship program for students ages 16-25 with nearly 100 participants annually.
Job Position Summary
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Associate Director of School Programs oversees the Production Based Programming and the Partner School Arts Education initiatives, and participates in long-term department planning.
The Associate Director of School Programs reports to the Director of Education and has two School Programs Managers as direct reports. The Associate Director of School Programs works collaboratively within a larger team of 7 full-time staff and 20 part-time teaching artists across the department.
Due to the nature of this role and interaction with staff across the organization, this is a fully on-site role.
Roles & Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise the School Programs Manager, Production-Based Programs and the School Programs Manager, Partner Schools, facilitating weekly check-in meetings with each and providing overall support
- Organize School Programs team meetings to best coordinate overlapping initiatives, deadlines, and upcoming events
- Spearhead the creation and implementation of production-specific supplemental curricular materials, including but not limited to students resources, workshop visual supports, MLL supports and more
- Project and reconcile the School Programs operational budget, working closely with the Director of Education and the Chief Education Officer to adjust budget in real time as needed
- Support ongoing evaluation of School Programs Initiatives, staying abreast of both specific NYCPS trends as well as broader arts education trends, identifying areas for program growth, and conducting school site visits throughout the year
- Maintain interdepartmental communication to ensure smooth student engagements
- Assist with grant proposals and reports, suggesting areas for donor engagement
- Work with Director of Education and Chief Education Officer on School Programs marketing materials and website content
- Work with Director of Education to identify areas for professional development among the teaching team
- Be available for occasional night and weekend on-call duties for last-minute staffing changes during high volume workshop weeks · Proactively support the Armory’s Youth Corps interns through participation in YC events, mentoring to help develop professional and personal goals, seeking ways to link student’s interests with opportunities and the Armory, and beyond
- Supporting the Post-High School Advanced Internship program by identifying potential internship projects and opportunities
- Perform other duties as needed and directed, including administrative responsibilities and hands-on support for Armory events and productions
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

- Knowledgeable and experienced advocate for the arts and arts education with exceptional planning and organizational skills
- Experience building relationships with administrators, teachers, and students in the New York City public school system and/or community-based organizations with a commitment to creating welcoming spaces for student engagement
- Extensive curriculum development experience with a strong understanding of culturally responsive curriculum and knowledge of state and city learning standards
- Demonstrated ability to manage a team and project manage multiple projects and priorities with concurrent and changing deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with a flexible and adaptable work style
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Demonstrated ability to execute large events with a student-centered lens
- Strong proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as in internet research
- Bilingual abilities are a plus
- This position requires on-site presence 5 days a week and the ability to travel to schools across the 5 boroughs via public transportation
- Per NYCDOE guidelines, this position is required to provide their fingerprints and information in order to undergo a background check and receive security clearance to enter NYC public schools and to work with students. This process must be completed within the first month of employment
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- 5+ years of arts education administrative experience or the equivalent combination of education, training, and transferable experience to successfully perform essential functions of the job.
- Post-secondary degree preferred, but experience is the most important qualification.
