Job Position Summary

Reel Works seeks Assistant Teaching Artists for our Reel Works in-Schools program for the 2024-2025 school year. We are looking for artists who bring fresh ideas in media making and education into our program offerings.

Reel Works in-Schools serves students ages 10-24 throughout NYC. Students will learn from a combination of instruction, hands-on experiences, guest speakers and trips, and industry events throughout the school year. Through this workshop, students will express their voices and complete projects displaying clear learning objectives.

Assistant Teaching Artists support the lead Teaching Artists in the classroom during their residency for a 1-26 week duration. During the residency, ATAs will have an opportunity to lead at least 2 lessons and receive 15 hours of professional development training from Reel Works or outside training partners. They will also attend mandatory development meetings at Reel Works.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Create a safe learning environment and open communication for all students from a variety of backgrounds
  • Interact in a professional manner with school faculty and administration, parents, and students as well as work with a diverse set of community-based organizations, residents in various communities, institutional and governmental organizations
  • Report weekly to supervisors about ongoings in classroom
  • Capture BTS footage of student filmmaking
  • Take attendance every class
  • Detail-oriented with excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal and writing skills
  • Be a positive role model to students, school staff and fellow Teaching Artists

Qualifications:

  • Background in filmmaking and arts education.
  • Ability to assist lead Teaching Artist in the facilitation of the class
  • Passion for working with school-age children (elementary school to high school) in a public school or public learning setting
  • Some experience at Reel Works or in community organizing, team building, and group dynamics is helpful.
  • Multiple languages is a plus

Salary: This is a part-time position that does not include health benefits. Assistant Teaching Artists should expect to work 10-20 hours per week. Hourly wage commensurate with experience in filmmaking, technical skills, teaching, and youth development. Pay range: $25-40/hr
