The Education and Community Engagement programs of Baryshnikov Arts exist to support excellent accessible, interdisciplinary arts experiences for anyone and the Assistant Teaching Artists within these programs are essential to delivering the programs with this vision at the forefront of their teaching practice. Assistant Teaching Artists are hired as part-time seasonal employees and have rates for planning and administrative tasks (administrative rate) and direct contact hours with program participants (instruction rate).
Job Position Summary
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assistant Teaching Artists report to the Director of Education and Community Engagement and have schedules determined by the programming and special events calendar. These are agreed upon mutually between the Director of Education and Community Engagement and the Assistant Teaching Artist prior to a program commencing. This role supports the curriculum set by lead Teaching Artists for all in-classroom instruction in relation to Baryshnikov Arts-determined programming.
The ideal candidate will be interested in working with children and arts education. Additionally, they will have a demonstrable record of responsibility and reliability in prior work experiences. Prior work overseeing and caring for children ages 4-12 is desirable.
This particular role will work in the Spring Break programs Baryshnikov Arts is presenting in Tivoli, NY April 14-18, 2025.
Roles & Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Model the instructional prompts of the lead Teaching Artist
- Provide modifications and individual student support while lead Teaching Artist directs the group
- Support lead Teaching Artist’s classroom management
- Respond to participant needs in the moment and with a calm, appropriate demeanor
- Keep an eye out for potential hazards like untied shoe laces or poor spatial-awareness of student body
- Prepare and clean up space (props, etc.)
- Manage student count/roster
- Escort students through non-instructional spaces to ensure safety and orderly conduct while students are transitioning from space to space
- Undergo a background check as a part of the onboarding process
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1-2 years prior experience working as a camp counselor, babysitter, or other child oversight role
- Interest in learning and engaging with understanding of childhood developmental stages and their associated impact on classrooms, particularly for children ages 4-12
- Ability to commute daily to Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, NY (please note that assistant teaching artists unable to commit to this will not be considered as housing and transportation cannot be provided as part of this opportunity)
- Experience and training in one of the offered art forms a plus
- Very strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills
- Knowledge and keen interest in Baryshnikov Arts programming and mission
- Strong communication and people skills, particularly an enjoyment of working as a mentor for young people
- Up to date First Aid/CPR certification a plus
Compensation
- This is a part-time seasonal position.
- Administrative Rate: $16 per hour
- Instruction Rate: $22 per hour
Benefits
Access to Baryshnikov Arts performances and open rehearsals when available, and priority access to $10 per hour studio rental rate when available and within NYSCA parameters.
