About Our Organization

Primary Stages is an Off-Broadway not-for-profit theater company dedicated to inspiring, supporting, producing, and sharing the art of playwriting. Since our founding in 1984, we have produced more than 135 new plays and have garnered numerous awards and nominations. We have developed and produced work by A.R. Gurney, Theresa Rebeck, Kate Hamill, Billy Porter, Charles Busch, Tanya Saracho, Sharon Washington, Horton Foote (including the Tony-nominated Dividing the Estate), David Ives, Donald Margulies, and Terrence McNally, and produced the original productions of In Transit (James Allen-Ford, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Russ Kaplan, and Sara Wordsworth), which transferred to Broadway in 2016, and Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter’s In the Continuum, which went on to tour the US, Africa, and Scotland.

Beyond our productions, Primary Stages supports playwrights and develops new works through commissions, workshops, readings, and our education, access, and training programs such as the Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA), the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group, the Echoes Writers Group, Creative Access Grants, Creative Development Grants, Teenwrights, our Free Student Matinee Program, the Internship Program, TixTeen, PS35, and the Primary Stages Off-Broadway Oral History Project.

Job Position Summary

Primary Stages seeks a dynamic, energetic, and dedicated professional for the full-time position of Education and Community Outreach  Manager. Reporting to the Director of Education and Strategic Planning, this position is the primary liaison for the 500+ emerging theater artists who take classes at our Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA) each year, and manages our outreach programs for NYC teens and artists from historically underrepresented communities.

Roles & Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides administrative support to ESPA, including processing all class registrations and confirmations, payment processing, faculty contracts, audition scheduling, waitlist management, and other administrative duties.
  • Provides Student Support Services, including answering general inquiry emails and calls, new semester communications, and customer service issues. Additionally, this person will be the liaison to work study participants and our student body as a whole. 
  • Assists with all ESPA events and collaborative programs (such as Detention, ESPA Drills, and ESPAfest).
  • Manages and maintains ESPA’s calendar and database. 
  • Works with the Director of Education and Strategic Planning to make ESPA a more equitable and diverse community through scholarships, access initiatives, and outreach.
  • Manages our teen programs and outreach initiatives, including our Free Student Matinee Program, Teenwrights, Internship Program, and Creative Access Grants.

Desirable Attributes and Interests:

  • An innovative administrator and leader who can take initiative, be flexible, and work well independently and with a team.
  • Well-organized, a quick learner, and collaborative with excellent people skills.
  • A passion for creating access and breaking down barriers within the theater industry, with a specific eye toward DEIJ initiatives and community building.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in education, particularly teen arts programming.
  • Proficiency in Google platforms, Word, and Excel, and experience in databases are a plus.
  • Experience with NYC theater, Off-Broadway, and theater in general is preferred, but not required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree, or commensurate experience. 
  • Because we are working remotely for the foreseeable future, access to a reliable internet connection and the ability to Zoom into meetings.
  • Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 by date of hire.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND START DATE:

The Education and  Community Outreach Manager position is available immediately. This search will be conducted by Sarah Matteucci and Shane D. Hudson. We will begin reviewing applications on March 23, 2022 and we will conduct two rounds of interviews, with each interview session lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Below is the intended interview and hiring schedule:

  • Round 1: (Approx 6-8 candidates) March 28 to April 8
  • Round 2: (Approx 2-3 candidates) April 18 to April 22  

Sarah or Shane will speak with the professional references of the final candidates during the week of April 18 as well and will aim to make an offer during the week of April 25. The start date will ideally be a day in May determined in good faith between the new hire and Primary Stages.
