About The Met Cloisters

Opened in 1938 as a branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Met Cloisters is America’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages. Including a museum and gardens within a single complex, it derives its name from the portions of five medieval cloisters incorporated into a modern museum structure. Not replicating any one particular medieval building type or setting, but rather designed to evoke the architecture of the later Middle Ages, The Met Cloisters creates an integrated and harmonious context in which visitors can experience the rich tradition of medieval artistic production, including metalwork, painting, sculpture, and textiles. By definition, a cloister consists of a covered walkway surrounding a large open courtyard that provides access to other monastic buildings. Similarly, the Museum’s cloisters act as passageways to galleries and gardens; they provide an inviting place for rest and contemplation for visitors, as they often did in their original monastic settings.

In-person and virtual programs include high school and college internships that promote career development and diversity; PreK–12 educator programs that train teachers to integrate art into curricula across disciplines; lectures and symposia that feature preeminent artists and scholarship; daily tours in multiple languages, and so much more.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

The Museum seeks a dynamic Assistant/Associate Educator, The Met Cloisters to join the Education Department, to create virtual and onsite inclusive experiences and programs that help audiences of various backgrounds, abilities, or experiences make meaningful connections to the art, architecture, and gardens of The Met Cloisters and to broaden The Cloisters reach and impact. The Assistant/Associate Educator, The Met Cloisters will oversee the day-to-day programming activities for all audiences and serve as the primary Education practitioner to implement audience engagement activities as part of The Met Cloisters 2025 Vision. This position is The Met Cloisters main educational contact for all onsite and virtual educational and programming activities. This position collaborates with Education colleagues, curators and other staff at the Cloisters and other departments across the Museum to develop and implement programming for children and families, PreK-12 schools and educators, audiences with disabilities and adult audiences, as well as advance audience development initiatives. A key role of this position is to, in coordination of lead a sustainable community engagement strategy and to strengthen relationships with the community and community partners surrounding The Met Cloisters. In coordination with colleagues in School & Educator Programs and Museum Teaching & Volunteer Administration, the Assistant/Associate Educator is responsible for leading training for Volunteer Guides and contractual Museum Educators that emphasizes inquiry-based, audience-centered learning.

The Assistant/Associate Educator, The Met Cloisters reports to the Chair of Education. This is a permanent, full-time position. Local travel is required, including travel between The Met Cloisters and The Met Fifth Avenue. Some early morning, evening, and weekend hours required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

• Serve as the primary Educator at The Met Cloisters, connecting audiences to art, architecture and gardens through inclusive and equitable onsite and virtual interpretation schemes, programs and experiences.
• Collaborate with the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters to develop inclusive, equitable and meaningful onsite and virtual interpretative and programming experiences related to exhibition content
• Manage the day-to-day operations of onsite and virtual programming for all audiences at The Met Cloisters.
• Manage public gallery tours, exhibition tours and talks, and seasonal garden tours for adult audiences.
• In collaboration with Family & Teen Programs, co-plan and support the implementation of family tours (in English and Spanish), Family Afternoons, Garden Days and festivals, and Children’s Classes.
• In collaboration with Public Programs & Engagement, co-plan and support the implementation of a suite of programs for persons with disabilities, lectures and talks, art-making workshops, and special events.
• In collaboration with School & Educator Programs, co-plan and support the implementation of school tours, camp and community youth group tours, school partnerships, and educator workshops.
• In collaboration with School & Educator Programs, Museum Teaching & Volunteer Administration, and others, co-plan and lead trainings for those who teach at The Met Cloisters (galleries and gardens), including volunteers, contract educators, and teaching artists. Serve as the primary contact for this teaching corps at The Met Cloisters.
• Collaborate with program managers from College & University Programs, and staff across the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters to supervise the undergraduate and graduate-level interns at The Met Cloisters as part of the Museum-wide internship program.
• In collaboration with Digital, Design, the Education team and the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, develop content for print and online educational materials related to The Met Cloisters
• Work with Marketing and Communications to promote and heighten awareness of educational and public programs at The Met Cloisters.
• Initiate and sustain productive relationships with colleagues in the Education Department, the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, and other departments across the Museum to leverage expertise.
• Manage budgets, track and maintain statistics and outcomes, and develop reports for the Museum, funders, and government agencies.
• Regularly teach programs for a variety of audiences at The Met Cloisters.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will possess strong project management, conceptual, communication skills and emotional intelligence necessary to foster strong collaboration across the department and the museum as a whole. In particular, the Met is interested in candidates with the following experiences and competencies:

Experience and Skills:

• Minimum 3 years of experience for an Assistant Educator, minimum 5 years of experience for an Associate Educator, working in museum education or other partner organizations supporting educational programming
• Demonstrated excellence teaching with original works of art and objects in a museum setting
• Experience training and coaching teaching volunteers and contractual educators
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to effectively and professionally communicate with a wide range of constituencies, verbally and in writing
• Strong project management and collaboration skills
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple, logistically complex activities simultaneously within a museum setting
• Excellent budget management and analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to set measurable goals, gather relevant data, reflect on results and leverage insights surfaced through the process to make continuous improvements.
• Fluency in Spanish language preferred

Knowledge and Education:

• Masters degree in education, museum education, art history or related field, required;
• Demonstrated knowledge of current theories and practices pertaining to art museum education
• Familiarity with local community of Washington Heights and the surrounding area preferred
• Demonstrated understanding of how to build and sustain partnerships with schools, community organizations, and other external groups
• Command of Microsoft Office Suite, digital learning platforms, and a variety of digital technologies
