Brooklyn Music School is a 501(c)(3) performing arts school with a mission of providing accessible programming to community members of all ages and abilities. We offer instructional classes and private lessons at our facility in Fort Greene and at partner sites throughout the city. In addition to regular instructional programming, we also offer special holiday break and summer programs, produce over 30 student and professional performances each year in our historic Playhouse, and offer scholarship and internship programs.
Job Position Summary
The Arts Reaching Youth (ARY) and Summer Camp Director is responsible for the development, management, and success of the Arts Reaching Youth after-school program for students grades K-5, including Winter and Spring Break Camps and Summer Camps. This includes creating class schedules, hiring faculty and staff, coordinating pick ups and dismissals, communicating with families, and monitoring staff performance throughout the program. This role requires strong communication and organizational skills, a knowledge of best practices in arts administration and classroom management, and a high degree of arts education and experience. The ARY Director is expected to play an active and flexible role, maintain a consistent on-site presence during program hours, and provide support to the Programming team as needed to ensure that BMS programs are delivered to excellent standards.
Roles & Responsibilities
Ongoing Responsibilities
- Hire and schedule teaching artists and counselors for both ARY and Camps
- Approve bi-weekly timesheets for counselors and teaching artists
- Supervise faculty and staff, including ensuring all shifts and classes are covered if employees call out
- Train counselors on best practices, school policies, and classroom management
- Perform staff and teaching artist evaluations to ensure the quality of BMS programming
- Collaborate with Director of Programming and Curriculum to ensure classes are running successfully and in accordance with BMS curriculum guidelines
- Collaborate with Operations Coordinator to ensure all needed materials and instruments are in assigned spaces for classes and performances and all programming is booked in our registration system
- Manage enrollment and oversee communications with prospective families via email and in person
- Create organized documents that aid in tracking program enrollment
- Maintain an open line of communication with parents, students, and staff. Communicate any issues or concerns to the Director of Programming and Curriculum or appropriate admin.
- Develop new ideas that increase program impact and enrollment
- Conduct team meetings and check-ins with faculty and staff as needed
- Purchase snacks and materials for programming as needed
ARY
- Develop after-school programming in collaboration with the Director of Programming and Curriculum
- Coordinate school bus pick-up at partnering schools and communicate with bus company to ensure smooth pick ups as needed
- Supervise and assign counselors to pickups at partnering schools and on-site arts classes
Create and update class rosters and student pick-up rosters daily and as needed - Plan developmentally appropriate activities for after-school homeroom
Coordinate and execute end-of-semester recitals in collaboration with BMS Programming Team - Oversee and manage ARY budgets including tracking all purchases, counselor hours, teaching artist hours, bus invoices, and recital costs.
Camps
- Develop Winter and Spring Break Camps including class offerings, schedules, and potential partnerships
- Develop Summer Camp offerings including camp schedule, classes, and planning Friday field trips
- Secure Summer Camp permits and ensure compliance with NYC Health Department and NYC Fire Department
- Plan and execute weekly camp fire drills with BMS admin and camp staff
- Coordinate and execute Summer Camp showcases in collaboration with BMS Programming Team
- Oversee and manage Camp budgets including tracking all purchases, counselor hours, teaching artist hours, and showcase costs.
