Celebrating more than 50 years of service, historically Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) is the borough’s leading nonprofit organization supporting artists and cultural groups in all disciplines. BAC is committed to serving the arts ecosystem through grants, professional development, cultural heritage programming, and arts education provided via distance learning. About the BAC Arts in Education (AIE) Department: 

BAC’s AIE Department is a creative powerhouse, enriching the Brooklyn community through accessible arts education. Our programs empower individuals by fostering creativity, cultural understanding, and self-expression. We integrate arts into the community through our Creative Pathways, Our Voices, Catalyst, and Global Rhythms school programs, Creative Aging residencies at older adult centers, and community programming across the borough. This programming nurtures critical thinking and innovation, creates artistic engagement, and enhances well-being and social interaction. Job Position Summary

Call for Fall Teaching Artists for School Programs at Brooklyn Arts Council 

Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) is accepting applications for school program Teaching Artists (TA) for the 2023-2024 school year! 

We host programming at schools throughout Brooklyn, primarily November-June, both after school and during school hours. Applicants do not need to live in Brooklyn but must have the ability to travel to Brooklyn. BAC TA’s can expect an average of 2-3 residencies (on average, 1.5-2.5 hours per week for 12 weeks per residency) per school year depending on programming needs. In addition to teaching hours, each residency includes paid planning and professional development hours. All hours are currently billed at $85/hour. BAC TA’s have access to Materials for the Arts and NYC Arts in Education Roundtable events. 

Our programming mediums include Theater & Performance, Music, General Dance, Global Dance, Visual Arts, Literary Arts, Digital Media, and STEAM. We serve students that are English Language Learners and in D75 programs. We primarily serve K-8th grade students but we do also serve a smaller percentage of high school students.

(Please note: This call is for TA’s for BAC’s school programming. Creative Aging, Global Rhythms, and Performing Group applications are a separate process which will be reviewed in brevity at the Prospective TA Info Session.) 

Roles & Responsibilities

Desired Applicants are TA’s that: 

  • Are legally eligible to work in the United States and can provide current and complete documentation for work.  
  • Can teach in English AND another language, particularly Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian  
  • Have experience with Social Emotional Learning, Culturally Responsive Education, Trauma Informed Teaching, and Abolitionist Focused Education 
  • Have experience teaching English Language Learners and neurodiverse, disabled, and D75 cohorts 
  • May or may not have experience teaching STEAM but are interested to learn more about how to 
  • Have availability Monday’s – Friday’s, November – June, for in school programming (8am-3pm) and/or after school programming (2pm-5pm) 
  • Represent the populations of students that we are serving. We serve students of the following identities and seek to add TA’s to our roster that identify similarly
    • Black, Hispanic, and Asian students  
    • LGBTQ+ students 
    • Immigrant students 
    • Disabled and neurodiverse students 
  •  Can teach multiple arts disciplines or specialties within a discipline 
  • Can teach one or multiple of the following arts mediums/specialties 
    • Literary Arts – creative writing, poetry, comic book creation 
    • Global Dance – Hula, Flamenco, African dance, Afro-Caribbean dance, Irish step dance, Mexican dance, Indian dance, Capoeira 
    • Theater & performance specialties – musical theatre, mask theatre, Shakespeare, podcast/radio theatre, improvisation, devised theatre 
    • Dance – ballet, jazz, tap, street dance, hip hop, contemporary/modern, ballroom 
    • Visual Arts – mosaics, jewelry making, sculpture 
    • Music – music theory, songwriting, instrumentalists 
    • Digital Media – digital filmmaking, animation

How to Apply

  • View and submit your application here by July 17. You must complete the application in one sitting. 
  • You can expect to provide a cover letter or video statement expressing your interest in joining the BAC AIE team, a resume or CV, 1-3 samples of your artistic work, a sample lesson plan, and 3 references who can speak about your arts education work 
  • After your application is submitted, applicants moving forward will receive an interview request via email for a 1 hour Zoom interview. After the interview we will contact your references via email.
