Morris-Jumel Mansion (MJM) Inc. is a vital cultural and educational institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and sharing the rich and layered history of New York City. As Manhattan’s oldest residence, MJM connects the past and present by engaging diverse audiences through its mission to preserve, collect, and interpret history, culture, and the arts in ways that inspire curiosity, reflection, and pride. Through its archives, exhibitions, and programs, MJM presents American life from pre-Colonial times to today–showcasing the transformation of Northern Manhattan from rural farmland to a vibrant, multicultural community.

This job is the lead artist/educator for an after-school (CASA) program with 6-8th graders from 3-5pm for 20 contact hours over two months (April-May). The focus of the program is Environmental Justice using the arts. The final project is an exhibition by students to be shown at the Morris-Jumel Mansion. There is a school teacher who will support the program as well.

The artist/educator will be responsible for leading 10 2 hour workshops, working with external artists to lead some of these workshops, taking two field trips with students, and working with Morris-Jumel Mansion staff to follow lesson plans and ensure necessary resources. Fluency in Spanish is necessary. A positive outcome will be leading the students to understand the issues around environmental justice and express their understanding and advocate for themselves and their neighborhood through art.
