Ann Street Gallery – Gallery Assistant

Safe Harbor’s Ann Street Gallery seeks a reliable and energetic part-time gallery assistant to work 8 hours/week including Saturdays. This is a year-round position, but work hours will fluctuate seasonally based on the gallery’s exhibitions and hours of operation.

The part-time Gallery Assistant will primarily work independently while attending the gallery during open hours, and occasionally work directly with the Gallery Director. The position is responsible for opening and closing the gallery; attending the exhibition(s) and open reading room space during open hours; and providing a welcoming, safe, and professional atmosphere for visitors in the gallery. The ideal candidate for this role demonstrates superb interpersonal skills in interfacing with the public, excellent communication skills, and a responsible and attentive work ethic.

Responsibilities include:

• • Opening/closing the gallery for open hours, ensuring the gallery is tidy and presentable, preparing exhibitions as necessary for visitors
  • Attending the gallery, welcoming visitors, answering questions about the exhibition/artist(s), and guarding the artwork on display
  • Communicating effectively about Ann Street Gallery, and Safe Harbors of the Hudson’s mission to promote housing & the arts in Newburgh
  • Checking in visitors, providing coat/bag check, sign-in, masks/sanitizer and occupancy counts as compliant with the gallery’s policies and procedures
  • Providing general information about Newburgh & other arts-related activities in the local vicinity and surrounding Hudson Valley area.
  • Providing support for artist workshops or other gallery events
  • Sharing on gallery’s social media
  • Providing exhibition support with occasional administrative and computer-based work

Qualifications:

• • High-school diploma or equivalent is required; college-level credits or degree in an arts field is preferred
  • Experience in customer service and public-facing work is required
  • Knowledge of Newburgh, Safe Harbors of the Hudson, and Ann Street Gallery is preferred
  • Interest in contemporary art is preferred
  • Presentable attire and punctuality are essential

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

• • Requires working independently (alone) in the gallery, may have lengthy periods of solitude in the gallery if there are few visitors in the space
  • Must be able to lift/carry or move up to 30lbs
  • Require prolonged periods of standing and/or walking in the gallery

Compensation:

This is a part-time position with a starting wage of $15 per hour. Part-time employees are eligible for paid sick days, holiday pay, and participation in the 401(k) savings program. Gallery employees have the opportunity to meet artists, and learn about exhibitions through presentations by curators/artists.
