Job Position Summary

The Art Department serves a wide array of undergraduate students from throughout the college including both non-majors and art majors concentrating in Studio Art, Electronic Design Multimedia (EDM), Photography, Art Education, and Art History. The Art Department also has graduate programs in Studio Art, Digital and Interdisciplinary Art Practice (DIAP), Art History & Art Museum Studies, and Art Education. The Department strives to nurture equity, access, and belonging in the arts among colleagues and students from different perspectives.

Roles & Responsibilities

The Academic Advisor will report to the Chair of the Art department at The City College of New York. In addition to the CUNY title Overview, the Academic Advisor duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct students’ academic progress audits; evaluate the Art majors’ GPAs each semester; and identify those students whose GPA is at or below the requirement
  • Assist students in completing graduation checks. Interface with the Dean’s office regarding graduation, registration, and student matters
  • Support and distribute advising, graduation, change of grade information, and documents to students in order to provide prompt services
  • Work with students to resolve issues and reconcile issues and discrepancies with CUNYfirst, Degreeworks, TAP, and FACTS and communicate with other advising units in the College to support clear, consistent messaging to students
  • Represent the department and attend campus and off-campus open houses to inform prospective students about our various programs
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff on curriculum clarity, changes to program requirements, and communication of requirements. Support the Chair, faculty, and Curriculum Committee with coordinating curricular changes and resolving any curricular issues that arise. Coordinate and review all curricular changes and help with revisions to the academic bulletin
  • Update student listserv/contacts and alumni network; coordinate department newsletter, social media, and alumni communications and coordinate curricular and career development communication with current students, alumni, and faculty/staff
  • Assist in maintaining record keeping systems; prepare· and compile reports as necessary and create opportunities to provide small group advising or develop creative approaches to advising and retention
  • Participate in department-wide equity, access, retention, and community activities to support student success in the arts and facilitate opportunities for student mentorship. Coordinate and manage all aspects of departmental student awards, including notifying winners of their awards and follow up with appropriate college departments to ensure awards are processed and disbursed
  • Work collaboratively with the Art Department and College-wide faculty and staff to develop and maintain systems of communication with the Art Department community and initiate projects based on experience and performance review

The current Art Department is a dynamic team of professional creative thinkers with a longstanding commitment to teaching and supporting a diverse group of students, many of whom are first-generation immigrants, underserved, and culturally and ethnically diverse populations. CCNY is located in Harlem, and the current student population hails from 153 countries, and 99 languages, besides English, are spoken on campus. QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A background in Art and/or working in an art school environment.
  • Excellent communication, time management, and organization skills.
  • Experience advising or mentoring in any setting.
  • Knowledge of CUNYfirst, DegreeWorks, FACTS, Microsoft Word, Excel, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Google Groups.
  • Content Management Systems and email marketing systems {i.e. Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, WordPress, etc.} knowledge.
  • Ability to collaborate/converse with faculty, staff, and students on Art Department curricular matters and independently manage relevant projects.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides academic counseling and planning services to a diverse student population.

  • Assists students with clarifying values and goals; counsels students regarding educational options, requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Offers academic and personal support to guide students through the course selection process
  • Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services
  • Monitors and evaluates students’ educational progress by conducting academic progress audits
  • Establishes and maintains student files, databases and records; prepares activity reports and analyses
  • May specialize in providing advice on specific programs or to specific student groups
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
