Job Position Summary
The Art Education program at CCNY prepares students to be critically reflective, justice-centered, and creative practitioners in schools, museums, and alternative arts learning contexts. The Art Education Program Assistant will report to the Program Director of Art Education at The City College of New York.
Roles & Responsibilities
Provides academic counseling and planning services to a diverse student population.
- Assists students with clarifying values and goals; counsels students regarding educational options, requirements, policies and procedures.
- Offers academic and personal support to guide students through the course selection process
- Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services
- Monitors and evaluates students’ educational progress by conducting academic progress audits
- Establishes and maintains student files, databases and records; prepares activity reports and analyses
- May specialize in providing advice on specific programs or to specific student groups
- Performs related duties as assigned.
In addition to the CUNY title Overview, duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Advising: Advise undergraduate and graduate art education students with special attention to New York State Certification requirements; coordinate with colleagues in Arts & Humanities Office and School of Education to provide accurate academic advising related to current course and career requirements; prepare and compile reports and graduation checks as necessary; interface with the Dean’s office regarding graduation, registration, and student matters; create opportunities to provide small group advising or develop creative approaches to advising and retention.
- Outreach: Support recruitment initiatives via online via social media and online information sessions; represent the Art Ed Program at campus and off-campus open houses to inform prospective students about our various programs; work with Program Director to develop strategies to expand recruitment.
Communication: Work with Program Director to develop and distribute Art Education communication materials to students regarding advising, graduation, fieldwork requirements, certification requirements, and student teaching requirements. Update student listserv/contacts and alumni network; coordinate program newsletter, social media, and alumni communications and coordinate curricular and career development communication with current students, alumni, and faculty/staff.
- Student teaching coordination: Develop relationships with NYC schools to facilitate placement of student teachers; work with teachers to streamline student teaching communication; advise current students on student teaching deadlines, applications, and processes.
- Office systems: Develop and maintain systems to track current students and Art Education alumni; assist in maintaining record keeping systems; maintain budget documents and forms.
- College participation: Participate in department-wide equity, access, retention, and community activities to support student success in the arts and facilitate opportunities for student mentorship. Work collaboratively with the Art Department and College-wide faculty and staff to develop and maintain systems of communication with the Art Department community and initiate projects based on experience and performance review.
- City Art Lab advising: Work with City Art Lab student coordinators to support afterschool and community programming in art education as it relates to curriculum goals; assisting with youth recruitment via communication with alumni; maintaining timely communication with community partners.
- Advising for related art materials: Work with students and faculty to determine and order appropriate art supplies for coursework; coordinate art supplies as related to course needs in Art Education; co-oversee work study students to maintain the Art Education Studio spaces and supporting technology.
- Curricular and program support: Collaborate with faculty and staff on curriculum clarity, changes to program requirements, and communication of requirements; assist Program Director with scheduling, adjunct hiring, and adjunct support. Collaborate with Program Director and Art Department and School of Education colleagues to develop and implement community-building events, professional development workshops, and resources to support the growth of the Art Education Student and Alumni network.
- Connor Fellowships: Coordinate and manage all aspects of program student awards, including recruiting applicants and follow up with appropriate college departments to ensure awards are processed and disbursed; coordinate student documentation of their Connor Fellowship projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A background in Art Education and/or working in an art education environment
- Excellent communication, project management, record-keeping, studio management, and organization skills
- Experience advising or mentoring in any setting
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Google Groups, social media (i.e. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress)
- Content Management Systems and email marketing systems (i.e. Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, WordPress, etc.) knowledge
- Ability to collaborate/converse with faculty, staff, and students on Art Department curricular matters and independently manage relevant project
- Experience with project and event management (i.e. maintaining deadlines, coordinating multiple elements of events, clear documentation, etc.)
- Awareness of studio art materials and basic studio art techniques
- Familiarity with NYC public schools and/or out-of-school settings
- Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and capacity to work in a collaborative environment.
