Job Position Summary
The School of Education at The City College of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Arts Education & Urban Equity to begin in the Fall of 2023. New York City is both the country’s largest school district and a vital context in the arts world; arts education sits at the center of this unique context. We seek a scholar whose work highlights the role of arts education in urban K-12 public schools and community settings as a tool for equity, civic engagement, and urban design. The ideal candidate will uplift the role of arts education in public schools as a vital site for empowering young people with the tools of critical creative problem-solving and analysis of how the arts are central to our urban ecosystems.
Primary responsibilities will be to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Arts Education (including justice-oriented arts pedagogies, culturally-sustaining curriculum design, and experimental use of interdisciplinary materials and methods in K-12 classrooms); to assist with the coordination and collaboration of the Art Education and Educational Theatre programs, and a new interdisciplinary program in arts education; to supervise and place student teachers in NYC schools; coordinate fieldwork placements; assist students in meeting New York State teaching requirements; manage systems for mentoring student teachers; engage in community outreach that supports program goals of social justice in arts education; provide academic and career advisement; and participate in service to the Teaching & Learning Department, the School of Education, and the College. The position requires a commitment to scholarly research and teaching resulting in publications, exhibitions/performances, presentations, and public-facing workshops. The successful candidate is expected to actively develop or maintain a coherent research agenda and publication record that emphasizes social justice, culturally-sustaining pedagogies, and classroom equity in education. All faculty are expected to participate in departmental and college-wide committees, service, assessment, and leadership.
The successful candidate will contribute to the diversity of the school by bringing a perspective, way of thinking and creating, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand intellectual conversations and pedagogical approaches of urban K-12 arts education. We seek candidates who have a record of success teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, specifically first-generation college students and those from historically marginalized communities. We are particularly interested in candidates who will bring to their scholarship and teaching practices perspectives that come from nontraditional educational backgrounds and/or understanding of the experiences of those underrepresented in the arts. Ideal candidates demonstrate knowledge of ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in arts education and concrete ideas about how best to create a just and inclusive learning environment, with particular sensitivity for ways in which racism, sexism, and xenophobia can appear in arts and art education settings.
The candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching learners from a variety of backgrounds, the ability to fully participate in an interdisciplinary environment, and the potential for academic leadership. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
This position is part of a City College cluster hire, spanning multiple Divisions of the College and focused on environmental, cultural, and social justice in New York City and the Harlem community.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have earned a terminal degree in Arts Education or a related field (visual art, dance, interdisciplinary arts, educational theatre, music, etc.).
Preferred qualifications include experience working with pre- and in-service arts educators, school-based teaching experience in the arts, a clear record of teaching and research rooted in social justice-oriented arts practices, administrative experience (i.e., project management, event planning, etc.), and an emerging or demonstrated record of research and/or creative work that uplifts justice-oriented arts education in K-12 schools
VACCINE REQUIREMENT:
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law.
