The Roundtable is proud to celebrate National Arts in Education Week by welcoming Erika Mallin, Executive Director of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), for this in-person conversation about NYSCA and how arts education fits into the agency’s work.
The conversation, moderated by Traci Lester (President, The Opportunity Agenda and Board Co-Chair, NYC Arts in Education Roundtable), will include discussion on NYSCA’s role in supporting arts education across the city and state, promoting sustainability through a shifting landscape, revealing pathways for careers in arts and culture, and visioning for the future. Q&A with attendees will follow, and light refreshments will be provided.

About Erika Mallin

Erika Mallin was appointed by Governor Hochul to lead New York State Council on the Arts in January 2024. Previously she served as the Executive Director of the Arts Program at the Aspen Institute, a global policy non-profit where she convened some of the most iconic cultural leaders of our time.
Prior to the Institute, she was the Executive Director of the New York City Tony Award® winning Signature Theatre Company, where she worked with both established and emerging playwrights and creatives. She also led Signature’s $70 million expansion and created one of the nation’s first subsidized ticket program to make theater affordable. During her tenure, the program served over 1 million people. Mallin has held positions at Manhattan Theatre Club, Atlantic Theatre Company, and at the New York City’s Mayor’s Office.

Mallin has moderated panels, presented and lectured at Columbia, Yale, NYU, The Kennedy Center and the Aspen Ideas Festival. She has sat on various grant award committees and consulted on arts management for cultural institutions. She received her M.S. from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and her B.A. from the University of Michigan.
About Traci Lester

Traci Lester is a nonprofit leader whose career has been devoted to supporting and uplifting diverse voices and communities across the country. She is the President and CEO of The Opportunity Agenda, a pioneer in using values-based communications, cultural engagement, and strategic collaborations to advance social justice. She has held other executive roles, including Executive Director of The Center for Fiction, a literary arts organization; Executive Director of National Dance Institute (NDI), an arts education organization; and Executive Director of Reach Out and Read of Greater New York, an early literacy and school readiness program. Most recently, she was a program consultant to the Hawthornden Foundation.

She is the recipient of the American Association of University Women’s Selected Professions Fellowship, the National Association of Health Service Executive’s Community Service Award, and was named to TheGrio’s 100 List as an African-American history maker and industry leader in the field of education. The Manhattan Borough President recognized her as a Cultural Leader in New York City. She is a member of the American Society for Public Administrators Pi Alpha Alpha Honor Society. She was also a Multicultural Fellow in Urban Affairs at The San Francisco Foundation.
Traci currently co-chairs the Board of Directors of The New York City Arts in Education Roundtable and serves on the MPA Program Advisory Board for San Francisco State University’s School of Public Affairs & Civic Engagement. In addition, she is an adjunct faculty lecturer at the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, City University of New York. She also provides capacity-building support to constituents of The Nonprofit Professionals of Color Collective and The Grunin Foundation.
She earned a BSFS from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, an MBA from Rutgers University, an MPA from San Francisco State University, along with a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Columbia University’s Institute for Nonprofit Management. She is completing her Doctorate in Education at New York University.
