Teach with GIVE: Conversations, Training, and Resources for Teaching Artists in Inclusion Settings

Join the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable for Teach with GIVE: Conversations, Training, and Resources for Teaching Artists in Inclusion Settings. This four-part series celebrates the public launch of GIVE: Growing Inclusivity for Vibrant Engagement, a collection of free online resources created by Teaching Artists for Teaching Artists working in Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) Classrooms in New York City and beyond.

Supported by voices from the field and research on GIVE’s impact in the classroom, these workshops will share resources to support the creation of liberated learning environments and vibrant arts experiences within inclusion settings. GIVE is the result of a multi-year, grant-funded collaborative project between New Victory, ArtsConnection, and Community-Word Project.

This series is FREE and open to all! Live ASL interpretation and automated closed captioning will be provided for all workshops in this series.

SCHEDULE

What could the future of arts education look like? More inclusive? More vibrant? We think so! Teach with GIVE: Growing Inclusivity for Vibrant Engagement, a collection of free online resources created by Teaching Artists for Teaching Artists. GIVE shares strategies, tools, printable resources, and more to help meet the needs of all students and create liberated learning environments in Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) Classrooms and other inclusion settings.

In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll hear from leaders in arts education as we celebrate the public launch of GIVE. Then, join some of the Teaching Artists and administrators who developed the GIVE website to collectively imagine a more inclusive, more vibrant future for arts education. We’ll explore what GIVE has to offer— including the Checklist for Planning and Facilitating an Inclusive Lesson. This specific resource opens the door to others on the site, created by and for Teaching Artists on topics like integrating strategies to support students with and without disabilities, creating stigma-free classrooms, partnering with Classroom Professionals, and more.

When you count Teaching Artists, Special Education Teachers, General Education Teachers, Paraprofessionals, and more, there may be quite a few adults present in Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classrooms and other inclusion settings. What kind of inclusive, vibrant arts learning is possible when those adults collaborate in creative and meaningful ways? Let’s find out!

This 2-hour workshop invites the voices and perspectives of classroom teachers and paraprofessionals into the room as we explore the GIVE: Growing Inclusivity for Vibrant Engagement website. By sharing experiences of successful–and challenging–classroom collaborations, we’ll start from a place of empathy, shared understanding, and excitement for what’s possible. Then, we’ll explore resources created by and for Teaching Artists that are designed to support you in understanding the various roles within an ICT classroom, building relationships and co-creating goals with your classroom partners, and utilizing a range of co-teaching models.

Imagining—and building!—an even more inclusive, more vibrant future for arts education asks us to integrate understandings of identity, positionality, and intersectionality in our classrooms. In doing so, can we reshape how we perceive and respond to classroom behavior? How do we build pathways for students with and without disabilities to feel seen and heard as their whole selves? How do we foster meaningful connection and community in our classrooms?

In this workshop, we’ll hear from artists with disabilities about their own educational experiences. Reflecting on these artists’ stories as well as our own, we’ll look at ways to build liberating classroom practices while rethinking and eliminating harmful ones. We’ll also share GIVE resources to support ongoing racial justice efforts in the classroom and beyond, including additions and adaptations made by Teaching Artists in 2020. By exploring resources that address identity and stigma in the classroom, as well as others that share practical tips and tools , we’ll build our capacity to cultivate liberated learning environments.

As Teaching Artists and education professionals, we know that reflection and celebration play an important role in meaningful learning. In this workshop, we’ll reflect on and celebrate the launch of GIVE: Growing Inclusivity for Vibrant Engagement—and we’ll look ahead to the ways each of us will carry the knowledge, strategies, and tools out into the world.

We’ll kick off the celebration by hearing from arts education leaders about how GIVE will help foster the liberated learning environments now and in the future. Then in collaboration with other Teaching Artists, we’ll each have the chance to try some of the ideas and practices in The GIVE Lab—a place to play, to experiment, to imagine. We’ll close with reflection and celebration strategies contributed to GIVE by Teaching Artists as we lift up those who helped create these resources and celebrate our journey toward more inclusive, vibrant arts education.

ABOUT GIVE

GIVE (Growing Inclusivity for Vibrant Engagement) is a free guide that supports Teaching Artists (TAs) in the creation of liberated learning environments and vibrant arts experiences within inclusion settings. 

The goal of GIVE is to provide a wide array of resources that support TAs in:

  • Considering how every student can be engaged and demonstrate their learning
  • Ensuring classrooms are safe and supportive environments for all
  • Effectively planning across students’ social-emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral capacities
  • Differentiating arts instruction in lesson design, facilitation, and implementation
  • Incorporating formative assessments that support student engagement and informed lesson design and goal setting for students
  • Building relationships with classroom professionals to co-develop programmatic goals, establish co-teaching partnerships, and reflection structures
