The NYC Arts in Education Roundtable Elects Five New Board Members

NEW YORK, NY – The New York City Arts in Education Roundtable is pleased to announce the election of five new members to the Board of Directors: Malika Flanagan, Javan Howard, Tiffany Lin, Alexandra López, and Leslie Moser.

Along with the newest class of board members, as of July 1, 2022, previous Vice Chair, Traci Lester, Executive Director of The Center for Fiction, joins Gary Padmore as a Board Co-Chair and Alexander Santiago-Jirau has been elected Vice Chair. Former Board Co-Chair Sobha Kavanakuidyil now serves as Emeritus after five years of leadership on the board.

Board Co-Chair Traci Lester welcomes newly elected Board Members, “The Roundtable Board of Directors is delighted to welcome this amazing new cohort of talented and diverse professionals who share a deep passion and commitment to arts education programming.”

“Now in our 30th year of service to NYC’s arts in education community, I look forward to partnering with these thoughtful leaders to advance the Roundtable’s work to create greater equity and access to arts learning across the five boroughs,” says Kimberly Olsen, Executive Director of the Roundtable. “As we continue to grow and professionalize the organization in this milestone year, we are thrilled to have Alexandra, Leslie, Malika, Jay, and Tiffany help us continue to meet the needs of our membership.”

With gratitude and admiration, the Roundtable also said farewell to Kati Koerner, Erika Atkins, and Kate Dorman who each completed their Board term limits as of June 30, 2021. We thank them for their critical role in the development and success of the organization. Their inspirational leadership and dedicated service have forever changed the organization.

Meet Our New Board Members

Malika Flanagan is a Project Leader at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and a part of the firm’s Consumer practice. Malika joined BCG in 2015 and is currently based in New York.  She supports clients mainly in the retail industry on topics including business strategy, operating model, and marketing. She previously worked at Cartier in retail operations and at Instagram as a product marketing manager. She received a BS in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from Columbia Business School. 

Javan Howard is a poet and writer from The Bronx, NY. He truly believes that the lived experience is the ultimate teaching tool and uses poetry as a social forum to foster discourse about love, culture, and identity. He has previously facilitated workshops across NYC with The New York State Office of Children and Family Services, Voices UnBroken, The GO Project and Wingspan Arts. He is currently a Teaching Artist for 92nd Street Y, Teachers & Writers Collaborative and Usdan Summer Camp For The Arts. He is also the TAP Co-Director for Curricula, Mentorship & Facilitation at Community Word Project. 

Howard’s work has been featured online at WNYC News, Black Heart Magazine, Brooklyn Stories Vol. 13., Poets For Peace, Zine #2: Poems For Resilience,  Silver Rose Magazine, The Broken Plate, great weather for MEDIA, The Watershed Review, and River Mouth Review. He is a recipient of the 2022 Aspen Words Fellowship and has work forthcoming in several publications including The Minnesota Review. 

Tiffany Lin is currently the Program Director for Partner Schools and Network at Exploring the Arts, where she builds equitable arts programming in title 1 schools across the 5 boroughs in NYC. Previously she spearheaded an arts education initiative with a roster of Teaching Artists into 20 schools in Brooklyn for visual, media, performing, and culinary arts at St. Nicks Alliance. She also managed arts internships in partnership with Center for Arts Education, SYEP, WLG, and as a mentor for arts programs across the city. 

She has taught visual and media arts ranging from pre-K to high school, in addition to senior centers and community centers. Tiffany has also worked in design leading communications teams for non profits. She serves as a mentor for American for the Arts’ Diversity in Arts Leadership, where she works with future arts administrators and educators. She also works with the National Art Education Association as a Commissioner for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion representing the Supervision and Administration division.

Alexandra López has worked as a theater director, producer and educator. She joined Lincoln Center Theater’s Education Program in 2008. As Associate Director of Education at LCT, Ms. López devises and implements performance-based curriculum for NYC students with a team of teaching artists and plans professional development workshops for teachers. She administers the High School Program, the Shakespeare Program, and the Songwriting in the Schools Program and supports the Learning English and Drama (LEAD) Project.

Previously, Ms. López was the Coordinator of the Paul A. Kaplan Center for Educational Drama where she administered graduate level courses for NYU students and NYC teachers and produced the New York City Student Shakespeare Festival. She also worked as a teaching artist for the Creative Arts Team, NJPAC, and the Wolf Trap Institute with students in New York and New Jersey and was a drama teacher and theater director at The Brearley School and the Bank Street School for Children. For six years, she served on the conference planning committee and co-chaired Theatre In Our Schools (TIOS), the American Alliance for Theatre in Education regional conference.Ms. López was the co-chair of LCT’s Anti-Bias Anti-Racism Committee and  is a trustee of the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America. She serves on Board of the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable and is co-chair of the 2023 Face to Face conference.

Leslie Moser is the Director of Product Management at Teachers Pay Teachers where she enables educators to get the instructional materials they need. Previously the Head of People and Chief of Staff at Teachers Pay Teachers and the Director of Technology and Communications at Teach For America, for the past 15 years Leslie has worked to support and empower teachers. Leslie is also a lifelong musician who currently sings with the Oratorio Society of New York and was a writer for The Muse, with articles published in Business Insider and Forbes. Leslie received her BA in History and American Studies at the University of Virginia where her thesis focused on the impact of No Child Left Behind on Social Studies education. She also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.
