NEW YORK, NY — Yesterday, following Mayor Eric Adams’ State of the City address, Kimberly Olsen, Executive Director of the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable issued the following statement on the need to fund arts education:
“The arts are essential for both our students and our city. Dance, music, theater, media, and the visual arts are integral to students’ ability to grow, develop awareness, broaden their perspectives, and celebrate their abundant talents. We appreciate Mayor Adams’ commitment to improving educational opportunities, especially for multilingual learners and students with disabilities. When we talk about making sure our public schools work for every student in every school, the city must work to ensure every student has access to arts opportunities that are proven to support mental health, improve attendance rates, and boost their development — because it starts with the arts.”
Background:
Last year, the New York City Arts in Education Roundtable launched “It Starts with the Arts,” a campaign to highlight the importance of arts education and urge city lawmakers to guarantee access to arts education for all students by restoring expiring funds for arts education.
