Reports to: Director of Education and Community, Manager of Youth Programs

Position: Part time

The Youth Orchestra of St. Luke’s is an El Sistema-inspired after-school orchestra program based in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. Faculty will design curricula, work collaboratively across our five sites, and enact our mission of providing access for instrumental instruction in a community which lacks such, and using a youth-centered ensemble as a vehicle to respond to the community’s artistic needs and interests.

Faculty positions will be offered to applicants who demonstrate an interest in working with multiple sites to create a cohesive curricula across our program. Programming runs from September 2018 through mid-June 2019.

Responsibilities in Consultation with OSL’s Education Team:

  • Teach group lessons, by instrument and skill level, at a minimum of two of our five sites Monday through Thursday, during after-school hours
  • Co-develop a developmentally appropriate curriculum that incorporates performance, composition and improvisation, and reflects both National and City-wide Arts standards, to be implemented across all 5 sites of our program
  • Curate teaching materials as well as repertoire for performance
  • Prepare students for monthly tutti ensemble rehearsals and performances, as well as performances based in the Hell’s Kitchen community
  • Conduct regular assessments of students’ musical progress


  • Attend weekly team meetings discussing curricula, student assessment and repertoire
  • Participate in monthly professional development workshops, and provide feedback for the selection of ongoing professional development
  • Assist in producing community-oriented events and workshops
  • Participate in long-term strategic planning and implementation of practices which build YOSL’s relationship to other aspects of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s Education initiatives
  • Represent YOSL at professional and community-related events

Working Conditions:

  • Rehearsals and teaching environments can be loud
  • Some work must be completed prior to teaching or while in a remote location
  • Occasional weekend hours required

Physical requirements:

  • Use a computer and a phone
  • Able to lift and move chairs, stands, instruments and other production equipment



  • Professional proficiency in violin, viola, or cello
  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience in group or class settings
  • Commitment to personal growth, self- exploration and to cultivating a reflective practice
  • Ability to work independently, as well as excellent interpersonal skills and collaborating with others
  • Willingness to travel within the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood during hours of instruction
  • A love for working with youth ages 7 through 18
  • Commitment to innovative and non-traditional approaches to music education and performance
  • Interest in sharing new practices with the field
  • Passion for learning and sharing concepts that are distinctive to YOSL
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to act with discretion
  • A sense of humor
  • Spanish or Mandarin proficiency a plus

We will ask applicants to teach a sample lesson with our summer group program. Alternatively, applicants can provide a link to a 20 minute video which demonstrates your teaching in a group setting.

Please provide a link to a 5 minute video which demonstrates your proficiency on the instrument you elect to teach. Live auditions can also be scheduled.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants whose materials have passed the first round of review will be invited to interview with our Director of Education and Manager of Youth Programs. Final round candidates will be asked to teach a 20 minute sample class with a group of YOSL students, and decisions will be announced by mid-August 2017.
