Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the After School Program Director, the Art Instructorwill plan, implement and lead an art after school enrichment program for middle school students as part of WHEDco’s After School Enrichment program at PS/MS 218. The class is for students in grades 6 through 8, will focus on a variety of visual art forms and media, and will accommodate diverse talents and experience levels.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Program Director to develop an age-appropriate visual arts course for students in grades 6-8.
  • Lead, supervise and provide guidance to students participating in the elective.
  • Encourage and promote positive expression, building self-esteem and personal growth, while developing design skills and technique.
  • Develop exercises that engage students in critical thinking.
  • Assist in the planning of workshops and special events.
  • Create lesson plans and select necessary supplies.
  • Attend all required professional development training.
  • Attend all required staff/planning meetings.
  • Take on special assignments, as needed, consistent with the goals and objectives of WHEDco’s youth programs.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in visual arts, design, education, and/or child development.
  • Prior experience in and knowledge of a variety of visual art forms and styles.
  • Familiarity with literacy and whole language teaching methodology desirable.
  • Well organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
  • Availability from 4:00-5:00 Monday through Thursday as well as for paid preparation time outside of program hours, from October 2017 through the end of June 2018.
  • Current, active college enrollment or college degree preferred.
  • Previous work experience in low-income communities a plus.

Competitive pay rate based on experience. This is a part-time, hourly position.
